He did say that no man would know the hour or the day of his return but he didn't tell people to not look for it. On the contrary he spelled out very concrete signs of his return and told his disciples to always be ready. Plus the bible devotes large portions of its text to prophecy. If God didn't want us to know about the signs of his return, he would not have left us so many clues in his word.

There is symbolism in the book of Revelation and no one person can definitively interpret the meaning of all the passages, but neither can it be explained away by simply defining it as allegory.

As it is said only the Father knows the day. There are still a few things in the timeline to occur, but the Man told you to be aware of the seasons and to watch for the ripening of the fruit for harvest time. A few days in the latter parts of Matthew will open your eyes, Ezekiel 38-9 will also do it.
