1/2 mile. Most of it is pretty good trails, the last 100+ yards would be through some dense woods.

What I was considering doing was (with another person) carry in a pirogue. We could throw all our gear in the pirogue.

I have a dog, she's just not ready. Might just bring her and see what she does.

The other option that Ive used on a bayou, is standing on the outside of a curve. With current, it will float down and hit the bank if your shooting just up current from a curve that breaks away from you.

That's not bad at all. Could probably put it on your head for most of that, and bring a machete for the rest. Glass pirogues barely weigh anything. Don't drag a wooden one I have drug a 12ft one probably 3 miles at one time around a marsh, through the swamp, and down an old logging road. Hell, get a shitty enough one and leave it out there

If you can throw a topwater with any accuracy, my buddy and I would use them to retreive decoys and ducks when we were younger. Caught a few bucket mouths in the process. We had a little travel rod/reel combo that was in a hard case I carried in my ruck sack. When we got older, we went to float tubes, which would be another good option if you can find one in the area.

if the water is warmer that 50 degrees you have about 30 minutes swim time... before it gets dicey...

When I went through my grandfathers things after he passed, he had a Prince Albert tobacco and a brass shotgun shell with the brass off another as a cap. Both contained matches, the shotgun shell had 2 bird bands in it also. He'd shoot his birds, start a fire strip down and swim out and get them, come back warm up and dress.

As stated by others, treble hook of some sort. Have used a weighed hook on kite string before. Throw over bird and pull in.
