| My Idea for a play off while keeping the regular season. (Posted on 11/18/12 at 11:29 pm)
So this is my idea for a regular season that make rivalry great while at the same time have a playoff system along with keeping the bowls. I say we should play a playoff games along with the regular season at the same time. and all it would cost them is 1 occ team and for victors other OCC games. So everyone have their schedule like normal and for the first couple of weeks we have games just like normal. Now here is how to give everyone a fair and even chance while keeping our regular season - 1 OCC game but have a play off system. There are 120 teams in the FBS. We put them ALL in one huge lotto draft. Pull their name and pull their school out and that is who you will face. Luck of the draw if you play them at home or away. So lets do this 120 randomly selected teams will play each other it would take someone OCC game spot. After 120 teams play 60 teams would still be left alive in the hunt. Once again there is a second lottery to be fair and see who pulls who, while the losers 60 will continue with their regular season scheduled for a bowl bid + the wild card spot base on style points using the BCS system. So now with 60 teams left, those team will drop their second OCC game and play again. 30 victors 30 losers. 30 victor moves on, 30 loser play their regular season game trying to earn bowl bids and a Wild card spot. 30 teams play using the lottery draft again and 15 victor will emerge while 15 loser will try for bowl games and style point. This is where the wild card spot comes in, using style points and the BCS system for those team that have lost. You pick the number 1 ranked team and let them play with the 15 team that have won making it a 16 team play off. Thereby keeping the BCS ranking in use and still making having a play off. Using random lottery picks again we get a sixteen game play off at the end of which we crown a champion. The championship game should be play at the end of the season after the bowl games. Details need to be hammer out but you guys get the idea I hope?

How would scheduling work? You would have absolutely no idea who you would play the next week. No travel plans or anything. This sounds like a terrible idea.

Local economies depend on football games. That would make it too unpredictable

If you are a D-1 school and want in on the playoff then you should front the money. If not move back to D-2. Isn't that the complaint that the big money conference SEC, Big 12, Big 10, and Pac 10 have a strangle hole on revenue sharing?

So could one team possibly end up playing all games away and another team end up playing every game away?

I hope you have a big hammer. For example: in this system, losers of any round revert back to their "mormal schedule", but suppose a loser's "normal" next opponent is one of the winners? Sounds like this has the makings of a scheduling nightmare!

you claim to "keep the regular season" but what good does the regular season do if it means absolutley nothing????? So a team could start off 0-5 but then when the "playoffs" start they draw some good matchups, go on winning streak and we end up with a 7-5 National Champion??? YAY!! I've lurked for many years and seen many terrible ideas, but this idea has got to be the worse playoff idea I've ever read. Not only is it a logistical nightmare, it completely takes all meaning away from the regular season and puts your hopes into a lottery.......WOW!!!

You spent way too much time on this and didn't notice how stupid this part was. You can't change a schedule in the middle of the season.

8 teams. 5 auto-berths for BCS conference champions 3 berths for highest rated non-BCS champions based on SOS Get RID of ALL polls. Tell Notre Dame to join a conference already, or STFU. If you can't win your conference, you shouldn't play for the national championship - apparently there was a better team in your conference, so you don't get a mulligan. It doesn't matter that other conference champions have an easier path, SOMEONE has to win the SEC, they should represent the conference. Regular season maintains importance, conference races maintain importance, playoff is a tournament of champions - not 'wildcard' teams looking for a do-over.

I think 3 non BCS teams in an 8 team playoff is too many. And while I like the whole conference champions only angle, I just dont think it would work. It's very hard to justify keeping a 11-1 non SEC Champ out of an 8 team playoff and have 3 non-BCS teams get in. I say you have 1 guaranteed spot for highest rated non-BCS School to allow them to have a shot then the final 2 spots go to the highest rated non-Conferenece Champ. Seeding would be based on BCS ranking. That way the #1 seed won't end up having to play the #3 in the first round if say LSU was conf champ and Bama was one of the wild card spots. More than likely the #1 would play the non- BCS qualifier. Goes against your whole "no mulligan" point but I think it would work better and give a team that lost an early game to a conf rival something to still fight for.

Keep in mind, the Big East would probably be in those 3 non-BCS teams more often than not.

"work"? It's the EASIEST solution, it would definitely work.

I don't even know what you're saying here, so I'm going to have to go ahead and say that wouldn't work.

This shite here just drives me fricking nuts. Either have a playoff or a have polls, why in the frick would you want BOTH??? I thought the whole idea of a playoff is to eliminate the polls.

In other words, minimize the importance of the regular season - which is exactly what I'm trying to explain how NOT to do. There is absolutely no valid justification to have wild-card teams in a college football playoff. 8 champions, no wild-cards and no byes. It doesn't get any simpler or more fair than that.

Hypothetical Situation.... Alabama goes 9-3 with loses to Michigan, Syracuse & ULM and we go 11-1 with our 1 loss being on the road in overtime by 1pt to Bama, putting Bama in Atlanta. Bama goes on to win the SEC and makes the playoffs while we go to the Peach Bowl. You would be cool with that? If so, thats fine..... I however, would prefer the current system over that..... just my opinion.
