| We ain't seen nothin yet... (Posted on 11/19/12 at 8:19 am)
Friend of mine's daughter has been working at Pizza Hut for 4 years now. Started out as a server and is now assistant manager. Has two kids she is supporting and not getting food stamps, government assistance, etc. Just working all she can to keep her head above water and food on the table. Receives no child support, either. Yesterday, she was told her hours were going to be cut, starting Jan. 1, from 40+ hours/week to 29 hours/week because of the ACA (Obamacare). And the beat goes on...

The libs will say you are lying and that if it was indeed true, the franchise owner is just a racist.

You're right about that. Hence the title of my post...

The other de facto response is for companies to just pay the penalty, it isn't that much.

But if other companies cut peoples' hours she can go get a job at one of those places to make up the difference. Not saying that's a great thing to happen to her and certainly not defending Obamacare, but all is not lost for her. And that's good.

Yes, paying the penalty is an option. Her franchise owner chose to NOT pay the penalty by reducing all the employees' hours to just below the threshold. If she can't find another job to make up the lost hours, she will go on food stamps and other government assistance. Thanks, Obamacare.

Sounds like Clinton telling Domino's Pizza CEO several years ago to just charge a little more per pizza to afford healthcare....

Here is what will happen. The feds will hold hearings on this matter and then figure out a way to start fining employers who do this. You watch.

And the answer is.... MORE REGULATION. You will see proposals to limit the number of part-time employees a company can hire. You will see the penalties adjusted to account for businesses that do this. Thrust and parry... We'll get to the point where a businessman won't be able to fart without breaking the law. The funny thing is, the liberals hate large corporations for some reason, and most of their regulation is aimed at them. The side effect of the regulation is that it's the little guy who closes shop because they can't afford to comply with all the BS regulation.

Without a doubt. Then when businesses go belly up and new start-ups cease to exist, the blame will never be attributed to Obamacare. It will somehow be the fault of the evil rich and conservatives.

As I understand it, as the law now stands, this is perfectly legal to sidestep the penalty by cutting employee hours down below the threshold, and this scenario was certainly discussed and mentioned prior to the law's passage. Now it is actually happening. Duh... Surprise! And the still unanswered question is: If a worker can't afford health insurance premiums at 40+ hours/week, how are they going to be able to afford health insurance premiums at 29 hours/week? The answer is that the worker will pay the tax penalty when they file their return. The tax penalty will still be cheaper than the insurance premiums.

Something will hafta happen. I just don't know what it will be. Maybe Congress will raise the minimum wage to $15.00/hour?

Isn't there a maximum of 49 employees before Obamacare kicks in at a company? If a company has a 50 people the penalty is only 100,000 dollars a year. Any franchise owner can afford to eat that, right? What's a cool 100K coming out a rich guy's pocket?

It's sad, but if a single woman with two maybe three kids (cant remember exactly) who receives no support wanted to work, she would have to make 60k a year to surpass what the government would pay her in checks and services. This assumes she takes full advantage of all programs. Welfare, housing, food stamps, medic aide, etc. I read that off a Yahoo report not long ago.
