Dog DNA Tests - UPDATED

Has anyone had this done? If so, what brand/method did you use? Were you satisfied with the results?

I adopted an amazing puppy from the pound, and while I don't really care what he is, I'm curious as to where some of his behaviors come from. When I looked at the reviews of one brand on Amazon, there seemed to be a lot of people who were pissed off at their results because of how ridiculous they were (like their mini poodle looking dog came back with great dane and lab results). However, there also seemed to be a lot of people who were satisfied with their results so...

UPDATE (since a couple of people seemed interested in whether the test actually worked) - I ended up getting the test and sending it off. The results came back relatively fast and seemed to be pretty spot-on. I can definitely see the physical and personality traits in my dog that the test determined were his two main breed types. They also give you a list of the next 5 breeds that could make up the part of the DNA that would be "mixed." 3 out of those 5 breeds were ones that I suspected, and the other 2 are totally plausible.

Tl;dr summary - I would recommend the DNA test to someone who was on the fence about them based on my personal experience.

Put a baby in front of it. If it gets bit then it likely has some pit in it.

Haha, take that pit bull lovers.

We used the Wisdom Panel brand and it was awesome. The results were cool. Came back within two weeks. Swab the mouth and send it off.

Yea, I liked the family tree that they built. The results for mine seemed pretty legit considering we didn't send in a picture like some of them require. There was a certain breed we absolutely knew was predominant in our dog and they identified it as one of the parents. The other breeds made sense for the most part, although there was some weird stuff when you got down to the small percentages.

This Wisdom Panel Mix Breed is the one I was reviewing.

The problem is that it's the more recommended brand from what I can tell. I wouldn't be so hesitant to do it, but the bad reviews about crazy results say that when they contacted the company, they never received a response despite tireless efforts to talk to someone. So far though, there appears to be two happy customers in this thread so I may still try it.

I think this is one of those things that you have to look at as a dice roll. Whatever result they give you won't be any different if they do it over. If it is different then you have to question their methods.

Seems like a cool novelty thing.

I used this one recently with successful results. I think it was about $50.

Looks like a full bred Akita on the box!

This is what I'm afraid of. Interestingly, they save your dog's DNA so that if you re-submit it, they know and tell you they've already tested it. But, on article I read said that they lost his dog's first test so he sent in a second sample and somehow both samples came back - somehow, the results were different.

I didn't know such a thing existed...I would like to do it on a registered dog to see if they find anything other than the breed that the dog is registered as....

I didn't know this existed either, but when I clicked on the thread, I expected it to be a paternity issue, someone's neighbors dog got knocked up or something.

I used the wisdom panel one and just got my results on Friday. It was pretty cool; I was not expecting the results that it gave me at all. However, they now make plenty of sense.

They actually make a test specifically for pure breeds. I think it's kind of a joke - like telling them what to look for before they even test the sample.
