re: Bottom line we need an eight team playoff system

Right now the SEC has 6 teams ranked in the top 10. How do you determine that the Big Ten champ is more deserving than one of them? Because of their conference affiliation? I don't get it.

I LOVED the drama of last nights games, and I don't want anything to frick that up.

Amazing comment. How does playoff diminishes that drama? Imagine, Ole Miss could have knocked LSU out of top 8 with a win last night; there would have been even more drama; just amazing how people get brain washed by this nonsense argument created by those who just want to make money.

Wait....what?

32 is over the top.

But while cries for a top 16 wasn't common, it wasn't exactly rare either.

And a 16 team playoff would make the regular season COMPLETELY irrelevant for the teams that should contend for the title.

We wouldn't be in a tizzy over Oregon and Kansas State losing because literally nothing would have changed other than seeding.

It's simple.

The larger the playoff, the less significance of the regular season.

Yes, with a loss last night LSU would have been out of the postseason, but guess what: LSU doesn't deserve a shot for that anymore anyway.

We took too many losses from injuries that kept us from being NC caliber like we were preseason.

Think about it......in a 8 team playoff, even K-State probably makes their way in.

It makes the awesomeness of yesterday largely ilrelevant.

Only if their awesomeness in the preceding weeks gave them some cushion. Why even have a championship game? Just let everyone play and present their body of work and that's that, i.e., a beauty contest.

All or nothing?

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

And awesomeness?

They just ran the table thus far in a conference having a down year.

Big whoop.

Examples of awesomeness include blowing the frick out of teams that would later go on to win their conference, I.e Oregon and Virgina Tech.

I don't mind the 4 team.

It's a good balance.

I just can't believe there are fools already campaigning for a larger one.

ONE OFF GAME PLAYOFFS DO NOT WORK IN FOOTBALL.

It is an inherently flawed concept, as proven in both CFB and NFL.

I honestly have no idea why some people get a hard-on thinking a larger playoff is "better."

Wtf are you talking about?

Beat the team across the line, its exactly what football is all about.

So instead of playoffs, football should be all about the eye test? Thank you jimbo.

Traditional football playoffs work by the logic that if you beat someone, you are better than the teams they beat

Except that doesn't work. It's invalid. You can point out numerous examples EACH year in both levels showing the flaw.

And it's made even worse by the fact that football is a complex sport. It's very possible that you can beat a team you can schematically match up well against, who in turn eliminated a team that matched up well against you.

A single elimination playoff does NOT crown the best team of the year.

Please show me where I even came close to suggesting this.

Feel free to go as far back into post history as you wish.

You're right, it determines the best team that day. Every sport in the history of man has always been like that since the first olympics, except college football. The fastest runner ran a bad race and lost in the gold medal round but he had the fastest qualifying time, its called sports.

No No No!
I have not read any other posts, but this is bad idea. If there's an 8-team playoff, it will likely be implemented for revenue purposes not just to the appease uneducated fans.

Football is the most physical sport I know. At this point in the season, teams have lost some significant depth. Increasing the size of a playoff only increases the likelihood of injuries. Also, teams won't be able to get as healthy since they'll have less time to rest. How much would it suck to lost your starting quarterback, left tackle, middle linebacker, etc. in the first game of an 8-team playoff? Those are very important positions, that can be difficult to replace so late in the season.

Wrong.

Not all sports do it, either Oylmpic or traditional.

I can see you calling golf not a sport, but college baseball? NBA?

Some of the same problems are there, but they are at least marginalized.

But that is the crux of the playoff supporter argument "We know it doesn't work in football, but we can't find a better way. It's way more important to be like everyone else."

And your citied argument of jogging is a horrible one.

Either you can run faster or you can't. Bad days do happen, but they are somewhat uncommon, if not rare.

There isn't a rock-paper-scissors element like in football.

I don't know about 8, but only 4 doesn't really solve much IMO.
At least have 6 where the top 2 teams get a bye

re: Bottom line we need an eight team playoff system

Where on earth is the logical basis for that.

They get nearly a month off.

The advantage of higher seeding is preferential placement.

No need to expand the system just to stack the deck. Even further.

Especially considering the fact that the only way that you can consider getting a bye in that scenario an advantage is if you feel the need to stack the deck because the playoff system is flawed.

1 month off.

2 games.

No need for a bye.

A 4 team playoff is a nice balance. The flaws of a playoff are expotiental in nature, so you want to keep the number of rounds down, not expand them.

And how does a top 4 playoff not solve everything.

You cannot argue with a straight face that there has been a number 5 team that has deserved to go, while arguing that the flaws of a playoff is "just sports" as many proponents do.

The only possible exception were the BCS buster....but their shitty schedules preclude their addition IMO.

As a huge proponent and supporter of a 4 team playoff, this is exactly the type of crap I and many others were worried about.

We haven't even HAD the playoff yet and people are already bitching trying to make it bigger.

People are so short sided they will turn college football's most awesome regular season in all of sports to college basketball's most meaningless one.

Turning the regular season into a seeding contest for the playoff is the worst thing that can happen.

4 is perfect, big enough to accommodate all worthy teams, small enough that it's very hard to make and keeps the regular season important.

i know; somehow they find the time to go to classes so our college boys should be able to also. is that what you meant? or do you just want to chunk the college thing and let college teams be semi-pro teams.

re: Bottom line we need an eight team playoff system

The NBA/NFL/MLB has ~30 teams, with a great deal of parity, who play a much longer schedule.

There are ~120 D-IA/FBS football teams, with way less parity.

What makes a good system for crowning a champion in one, does not work for the other.
