There are a lot of good teachers and they should be rewarded. That said, there are an equal number of bad ones. Overall, teachers complaining about money annoy me. You became a teacher. Teaching isn't that difficult to get into. Some work hard, some don't. But let's not pretend you're working investment banking, medical or law hours, even if you are one of the more devoted teachers. It is all expectations to me. You know what teachers make. You're going into a profession that has an almost charitable aspect to it. You didn't put in the money or time to go into a lucrative private sector field (and that is not a slight), so why would you expect differently? For those who went to Vandy and majored in engineering and are now making 40k teaching science in a public school in the burbs, that is your problem. When the other teachers you work next to went to directional U and struggled, you should have gotten the hint.

A lot of people keep comparing teaching to a standard 9-5 job, which may be true. But few people who work 9-5 are making a ton more than teachers do. I know a lot of folks who work 8-7 or so, work at home and work on weekends who make 55-75k. Vacation is hard to come by, they get far fewer holidays, and the jobs are pretty stressful. Also, a lot of them spent a lot more on schooling and had to go through much more rigorous training to get their job.

It's not all about $ for good teachers either. I have plenty of friends who don't like their jobs but like their pay checks. I love my job and working with those kids everyday. I couldn't imagine being in a cubicle or on the phone all day long. B/c I coach and teach holidays don't really happen, but that is what I chose to do. You won't find many men who teach complaining about it. If anything it's "the Man" getting involved instead of just letting us teach. It's a profession dominated by women, and for the most part women complain about challenging things. I'll throw nurses in the same boat.

Why not make teaching competitive where if you perform well you get a raise? Not just scores on your class' aptitude tests, but other things like class grades in general, and the way you teach the subject and your class' performance after that year is over and another teacher sees your student and how much they learned with you?

What state are you talking about? I don't know of a teacher salary schedule in Louisiana where after 2 years a teacher makes $50,000. Let me know if there is one.

I'll also add that Public Defenders do not make near what they should.

Of course not. Unless they are still using the "grading papers" excuse.

Depends on your state. Some states, both do very well.
There are school districts in Illinois that pay teachers 6 figures.

Nobody would teach in poor neighborhoods.

Both of my parents taught or were in administration for over 35 years each; they were not underpaid. They worked 9 months per year when teaching and full year as administrators and were paid well. Law enforecement probably does need to earn more but where is it going to come from; higher taxes on all of us because we know how well the state manages finances.

Getting mother fricked by a teenager on a daily basis also plays a role in this. The newest trend is to work as hard as they can as a class to get a teacher flying off the hinges ready to fight and they record the teacher fighting a student and using it against the teacher. Teaching is stressful. I deserve more than I make. No bullshitee

I'm sorry. Also, I'm not intending any disrespect, but most teachers aren't exactly the most enlightening, intelligent creatures, at least in Louisiana.
