My mom teaches in St. Tammany Parrish and they certainly do hold the teachers accountable at her school.

What percentage do they fire every year? Just trying to get an idea on how they handle the bottom 25% of performers.

Considering her school ranks in the Top 10 for public HS in the state... They don't have to replace very many. A couple a year at the most. Every full-time teacher has their Master's Degree... Most (including my mom) have their +18 on top of that. When they do bring in somebody new - It's usually somebody who has preformed highly at another St. Tammany school and wants to work somewhere where everyone is on the same page as far as ethics/dedication go.

Well, that is the thought process of a failing business. They should be axing the bottom performers to make the school better. They are basing themselves off of their competition when the competition should be trying to imitate them.

Survival of the fittest.

I agree with this. We have fricking football players , Judge Judy, and Aids infested guidos making millions, While the people who mold our children to succeed in life make 20k.

Dude my wife just threatened your life. LOl Until my wife was a full time teacher i thought the same thing. She is a teacher for the first time this year and i was misinformed about their work ethic. She and many of her colleagues work well after hours during the week and she works most of the day either sat or sun. i'm thinking, hoping it gets better after a few years of experience of the grade she teaches. We all have a common misconception about the educators or our children though. they work tireless hours to develop our chilren.

Welcome to 2012 everyone works longer then 40 hours. My wife is USCG on a cutter here in Hawaii. They are underway every other week patrolling Mon-Saturday no going home just those days on a boat. Whenever she is off on the weekend or they are in port they still have to stand overnight duty as the ship has to be manned 24/7 even in port so yet again another day she has to stay overnight. While boat is in port they work a normal 40 hour work week. On top of that as she is the cook for the boat she grocery shops on Sundays before they get underway. Takes several hours to buy a weeks worth of groceries for 14 people.

Now please... complain a little more.

Oh by the way. She will be patrolling the week of Christmas since President Obama enjoys his vacations to Hawaii so much. Holidays aren't days off for us

She also gets paid a lot more and the retirement plan is much better.

My Dad is a Naval Commander, Ret. 23 years active duty. 2/3 of it ships... Oil Tanker followed by a Guided Missile Frigate followed by and Aircraft Carrier... then the War College and The Pentagon.

ETA:

My cousin flew helicopters for the Coast Guard for many years (Pensacola---->Alaska--->Chesapeake Bay area) before going behind a desk.

Just saying that apparently 48 other states don't think it is that hard to perform better than out magnet schools. I assume we are still somewhere around 48th in education. It was an attempt at humor.

I get that the top 20 schools in our state could probably hold their own with the national average.

You missed the entire point of that.

Im finishing my residency
My brother is a teacher

He makes a little more than I do.
We both think teachers get their fair share

Big difference between O pay and E pay. For time worked the pay isn't on par, or even close.

The retirement plan is much better? Because the retirement plan is changed or threatened to be changed yearly. If you think the retirement plan when we retire will be what is currently offered then you need not post here anymore. Shows how little you know.

I'm sure she loves what she does too... and puts in extra time as part of her job.

Was referring to people who work their arse off more than 40 hours a week because that is what they are paid to do, a job. The work teacher do at home is work that everyone else has to do away from home because they don't have the luxury of being able to take it home.

By the way show me any navy ship that's underway half of the year.

And go!
