Teachers only work full time nine months out of the year.

Depends on your state. Some states, both do very well.

They deserve less than what they make.

Teachers are overpaid. Source: Me For real, they complain about working more than 40 hours for a salary job. Every salary job I have worked required more than 40 hours.

Explains your point of view. Doesn't make it right, but does explain it.

Louisiana has some of the worst public schools and crime rates in the country. Obviously police and teachers are both failing at their jobs.

Let's start putting some blame on the students and parents.

Dude my wife just threatened your life. LOl Until my wife was a full time teacher i thought the same thing. She is a teacher for the first time this year and i was misinformed about their work ethic. She and many of her colleagues work well after hours during the week and she works most of the day either sat or sun. i'm thinking, hoping it gets better after a few years of experience of the grade she teaches. We all have a common misconception about the educators or our children though. they work tireless hours to develop our chilren.

The NEA's take on the problem is "You can't make people learn that don't want to learn" then tomorrow it's "if you throw more money at us, we can fix the problem." Teachers in some states are underpaid, some are over paid. Individual teachers only make so much difference in the system though.

Just because they're in classes for 40 hours a week doesn't mean the work stops there. They are required to work duty stations before and after school and rotate their lunches. Do teachers grade papers/tests or make lesson plans while they're in classes? No. Do HS teachers teach the exact same class every period? No. Usually they teach 2 or 3 different ones... So that means lesson plans, creating/grading assignments and tests for multiple subjects. My mother has been a teacher for more than half her life. Even with an extensive bank of questions that she can mix and match to create multiple tests (to prevent cheating) per class each subject each year... She spends between one and three hours 5 days a week AT HOME as part of her job. Teachers work a lot more than you think they do. ETA: She teaches 3 American History and 2 World History classes for the year (Some regular, Some Gifted/AP) and usually splits her 6th period between Free Enterprise and Civics (sometimes Geography) a semester apiece. During major exams... She spends WELL over 3 hours a day at home grading essays and tests.

Yeah, she sounds unprepared for the job, or in her first year. I have enough teachers in the family and have seen their work ethic. I don't doubt they work outside of work, it is a salary job. I have seen them buy stupid shite for their classrooms. I have heard them complain about stupid parents. All of this shite they new before they took the job. Yet they took it anyway and bitch about it, sounds like a perfect profession to attract women. The reason they are paid what they are is because that is the market value. The market is over saturated because in reality it is a good gig. Very few jobs can you hit 50k within 2 years and maintain it with little chance of getting fired and great benefits. Truth is tomorrow I will be with two teachers that will complain about how hard their job is and laugh about how I have to work when they are off for the next week.

Teachers and most law enforcement aren't state employees.

Why don't you ask them how much of that time they're getting stuff ready for finals coming up in a few weeks. I know my mom will be.

I know, I get Facebook updates about how horrible it is that once every 8 weeks they have to report 30 minutes early for duty. What a bitch.

Virtually nothing taught in HS changes year to year. The lesson plans they use pretty much transfer. Yeah they tweak it, I get that.

A whole hour?!?! Holy shite. I ignore the three because me and you both know that the three hour days are few and far between. Also, they get an hour off for lesson planning during work hours. Not including lunch. Also time before and after school to get a full 8 hours.
