FWIW, I don't think you should have to tip on the full price of a happy hour special or whatever.
But that statement you just made is a cop out and I hate it. Being a server isn't any less of a job than anything else and if everyone got a "normal" job, you'd be making your own food every night.

Tabs at bars are always a bad idea. I pay cash per drink and tip per round. Take today for example. Got to Finn's a little late at 7:00am. Had 8 Brooklyn Brown Ale pints at 4.25 per pint. I tipped a total of 15.00. I always get great service and know the bartender.

There are frick tons of possible reasons. Some of which you won't guess because you don't know their perspective.
The first one is simply the fact that you intended to tip less than 40% thus "costing" her money on the special. If you didn't mind tipping the 40%, you wouldnt have asked it to be removed and just not tipped any more on top of it.

I was reading something the other day about the service industry and someone said they went to a restaurant and had a girl that really just acted like she didn't want to be there. She had a slight attitude and while she did everything correctly, she wasn't excited about it at all. He said that they could have easily left a shitty tip, but instead they gave her a very large tip and wrote a note on the receipt that said, "Sorry you're having such a bad day. Hope everything gets better". He said he stuck around and saw her read the receipt, which made her sit in a booth and start crying with gratitude. I'm not by any means saying we should just tip people with poor attitudes.. but I thought it was nice that this guy took the time to think about the fact that she's a person that could be going through anything. You never know what a person is going though.

When they took the job, they knew they were taking the risk of not having a guaranteed income. When I got into sales after college where I was commission, I knew the risk as well.
To me, the price of the food includes making it and bringing it to me. Do I tip? Sure, when I feel the service was worth it. Do I feel obligated to do it? frick no. If the server doesn't like it, then tough shite.

Where you live there are people called professional waiters, same as where I live. They make a helluva a living because they are great at their jobs. Just like a doctor, attorney or salesman.
