After Saturday's 45-22 win against Indiana, someone flat out asked the 43-year-old: Are you going to be Penn State's coach next year? Surely that was an opportunity for O'Brien to pledge his commitment to Nittnay nation. Surely that was the time for him to say despite the national accolades he's receiving, despite the rumors that are floating around, he wants to be at Penn State for the long haul. Instead? O'Brien was coy, vague and perhaps a bit defensive. "There's no story there," the coach said, adding he thought the media planted the story last week by mentioning NFL openings. "I'm focused on one game at a time. I'm focused on this football team."
NFL here he comes.

That sounds like a pretty solid assessment to me, appreciate it.

Is there no convo going on with Briles or is he not on Long's wish list?

No clue. Briles and James Franklin were my initial co-leaders at 12.5 to 1 odds back in June. I've assumed that the new stadium and campus upgrades means Briles is staying there for some time. I also think Briles is Texas' next coach, but he may have decided to make it home. He could coach at Baylor for 20 more years if he wants to.

Here's my take on the Jeff Long raise and contract extension. It's tied in to why If I had to pick a probable coach today, I'm going with Butch Davis. The timing of Long's extension and raise is kind of funny. My dad asked me if I think he has his guy locked up, and I say no. I believe JL used a slight and small timeframe of tremendous leverage. It's likely not a reward like most Hog fans think it was. I don't buy that JL hired a homerun and the BOT immediately bumped his salary and extended him 5 years. It's one of 2 scenarios. JL went to the Chancellor and said "hey I've got so and so, ready to commit for a 5 yr deal at $22.5MM with a total kitty of $6MM for HC and assistants. BUT, he wants to make sure I'm solid, and I'm not leaving for Stanford or Miami, or all of these AD jobs that I'm being rumored to have interest in. Make me solid, and I can make the football program a top 10 team for a long time." Scenario 2: JL was pretty much bludgeoned into hiring Mike Anderson by us fans. There was no other choice that would do. I wouldn't rule out Jim Lindsey and John Tyson getting a majority of BOT members on board for Butch Davis, and then expressing that if JL did not pull the trigger on Butch then his employment could not be guaranteed past his current contract. However, if he signed off on Butch, they'd double his pay and extend him 5 the length of Butch's contract. just my 2 cents straight from my ass.

Tulsa world is pushing Butch and realize they have been on with Razorbacks sports in the past. They announced Mike Anderson first before the rest of the National media picked it up. I believe your scenario number 1 is the real package deal and Long made a bunch of promises to the board which if he can not deliver on leaves him on a shorter plank with a shorter rope in order to hang himself with. Things can and do change so if his verbal commitment backs out he is screwed. just my 2 cents

I would think Jeff Long would only get a contract extension if everyone was happy with the hire.

Gonna be a lot of angry people if it's Butch. Not necessarily because of who it is, I mean come on, Razorback fans will convince themselves that anyone is a great higher in a few months and national championship here we come. People will be angry because we could have had him in April/May and we'd be convinced we could have salvaged at least 7-5 and fewer embarrassing losses this season. We wouldn't have missed as many recruits either (we'd say).

dude we had 17 returning starters from a team that beat Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl the previous year. We returned more starters than Kansas State and they were the number 1 team in the nation for a week. If we had not lost Petrino then we would have 8 or 9 wins this season and would have gone to a bowl. Do not tell me we were not talented we were, do not tell me that they tried but it did not work. The discipline and work ethic went off the road and into the ditch with our coach. Who still lives in Fayetteville, AR. which we should rehire.

Do. Not. Want. recruiting was hard enough, it would be near impossible if they brought him back. The hypocritical bible thumpers would raise Caine to no ends. JL is smarter than to poke that hornets nest. I hope it's complete razing, down to the foundation (which is pretty dang strong actually).

no we can do better. i think Patterson and Gundy are better coaches than Petrino at this point in their careers. gundy is a better recruiter and can put up offensive numbers, patterson is a better recruiter and can put a whole team together with offense and defense. Petrino can't recruit....

Why is KNWA doing "The List"? They're getting everyone excited over names that won't be considered and truthfully names fed from the Internet not any sources within the department.

because the only one who know just got a raise to a cool million a year and he is not talking other than innuendos as I have this and I have my coach picked out. Ok, the last time million dollar Long said that crap he came up with John L Smith. So you telling me you have faith that he will deliver a good hire?

John L was best at the time. This season happens no matter what, the signs were there. Whoever comes in will have a mess, look at what happened to Kragthorpe and Idaho before. Maybe not 4-8 but 7-5 was coming.

I don't doubt we would have done a lot better this year with Petrino. My point is that if we hire a guy we could have hired in April or at any point in between then and now, then we are dumb. Why would we have done that? I happen to agree Butch Davis would have been worth at least 6-6 compared to John L's 4-8.
