How the hell did pizza delivery people make it for 40yrs without the extra charge? Hungry Howie's charges $3.95 to go from Nicholson to Southdowns.

2.13 is federal minimum hourly wage for tipped employees, but the employer can only pay that low if the person's hourly amount plus their tips equals the minimum wage for their area/state. A lot of the servers that bring your food to you. Some make more but most don't. I'm sure someone will name a restaurant where they make more and assume that the whole industry does the same thing. Asking that question is another reason gratuity exists. There is still a large group of people who believe their server makes minimum wage.

If a waiter or waitress wants a tip from me they have to earn that shite. None of that give 15% or more automatically shite. Don't give me that "we only make what you give us" shite either. You chose the job and you knew how the pay would work. I'm there for the food, not you. Several times, I've gone to a restaurant, gotten the salad bar and never need a refill on my drink. Why in the hell would I tip a waitress for that? She brought me one damn drink. I did everything else on my own. They do more than that at damn Burger King but I don't tip them, why would I tip some broad who brought me one drink? /rant.

Bull. shite. people should tip for the regular price, not the discounted price. Auto-grat is the right call. I'm going to make sure to force my kids to work in the service industry for a few years at least so they don't treat them like shite for the rest of their life. The attitude of some of you people amaze me.

Ha! It's absurd to auto tip on the full price of a special - especially a drink special. If I'm a manager I'd be giving her a pretty stern warning on that one.
I worked at a restaurant in undergrad. If there was an autograt, the manager was the one who added it. Restaurants generally don't allow waiters to add their own autograts. Thus, don't get mad at the waitress. It was obviously the restaurant's policy to alllow it.

I'm losing patience for places that ask for tip and don't deserve one. For instance, I had a food truck hand me a receipt with a space for tip. I just went...for realz?

they are offering you a service, are they not? if you don't have the money to tip, do not eat out. i respect someone who is being a contributing member of society. however they want to earn their money is their choice. in the service industry, you work off of tips- not hourly. my policy is, "i don't frick with the people who bring me my food." be gracious and kind. not stuffy and stingy.

I would agree if the OP used a gift card, but these were the restaurant's prices. Tipping on the discounting price seems proper

That is why they should just increase the price of the food and pay a normal wage. Then instead of having to hope shitheads tip, everyone will pay more for the food.

i agree. my biggest complaint about eating out is the price of soda. if i order a soda and it costs $2.50... when it costs the company less than a dime(sometimes less than that) for the syrup per glass... why charge so much? if a server doesn't charge me for a soda, i almost double their tip. i'd rather give the server the $2.50 than the company who is charging me so much for a fricking soda.

They charge that much because of free refills.. they still make a ridiculous profit though. I love eating at places where a friend is a server because they never charge me for the soda Last weekend I went to BJs and my friend got me their employee discount for soup and salad and didn't charge me for soda - my bill was $1

the main reason i tip so much is because if i find a place i really like or a server i really like... i become a regular. i enjoy being taken care of as a patron. so i will always take care of my server... because a. it's the right thing to do and b. i know the service i receive will be top notch.

The price of the food is for them to cook it and bring it to me. Why else would I pay $12 for a chicken titty and some mashed potatoes? Hell I can get boneless skinless chicken titty from a grocery store for $2.99 a lb and a pouch of mashed taters for 99 cents. I pay the extra $8 for them to cook it and bring it to me. If waitresses/waiters want a tip then they have to earn it. The service industry is full of a bunch of entitled asses now. Remind me of union workers.

Random question: To the people who tip $1/drink, do you do this when you pay with a credit card tab too? Like, do you count out the drinks on the receipt? Just wondering. I've noticed that when I pay per drink with cash, I usually leave $2/drink, but when I open a tab and pay with my card at the end of the night, I don't count the drinks or anything. Just leave like 40-50%.

The idea is you pay for your service. Most people understand the routine and don't have a problem doing so.

Yep Some nationalities don't tip. Generally people who are a-holes don't as well. I was a tour guide in college and you learn to spot them. Tips aren't generally reflective of service, but the type of person being servied.

It's VERY easy to tell who will tip well and who won't. Don't get me wrong, sometimes you're pleasantly surprised by the thug who leaves a nice tip. But for the most part, it's a piece of cake. I'm an excellent tipper, and my server knows it even if they've never met me because I am overly polite and gracious towards them the entire time.
