| Chicago during Thanksgiving-Wednesday Update (Posted on 11/17/12 at 1:22 pm)
Five of us meeting up there from Wed-Sat. One kid 4 yo, the rest grownups. What do we want to do? Which of the popular places are overrated? What are some cool places that nobody knows about? Are there any tours that aren't shitty tourist trap tours? Give me good ideas and I'll post babes. So I landed around noon yesterday and too the train into town. I Hotwire gave me a smokin' rate at the Radisson Blue Aqua for one night. I took a boat tour of Chicago arcitecture and walked the Magnificent Mile, ending up at Gino's. Noon today the rest of the family arrived and we all checked into the Essex Hotel on Michigan Ave. We took the double-decker bus tour, which I highly recommend. It goes around to all the cool stuff and you can hop off, check it out and hop on another bus coming through. (Busses arrive every half hour or so.) $35 gets you a 3 day pass. The Navy Pier is overrated, just as someone said, but the Willis Tower is worth the ride. I gotta do Google work to find out what all's open tomorrow but I'm sure we can find a museum or two open.

All the restaurants in Chicago are good. The bad ones all went broke. Try a Chicago style hotdog and also an Italian beef sandwich.

Go on top of the Willis Tower. They have some nice parks and museums. Navy Pier is very overrated. The weather will probably suck because it is so damn windy Get a hot dog at Portillos and of course get a deep dish pizza

The worst Thanksgiving that I've ever had was in Chicago. It was the coldest Thanksgiving on record, and my mom was shopping up and down Michigan Ave.! I took off and went to the ESPN Zone.

Chicago sucks from late October to March. Unless you like freezing your balls off.

Chicago will be cold, but it will still be awesome. I'll second the peeps who already said get some dogs at Portillos. As for deep dish, I prefer Gino's East, but any Chicago-style is excellent. A few years back I went to Lawry's for thanksgiving dinner and it was amazing. I would highly recommend it. As for the bars, it depends on what type of crowd you are looking for.

At least the cold should shoo the rambunctious youths off the streets. I'd check out Rick Bayless' places, for real.

Most of them. Every Chicago thread on this board is full of awful tourist suggestions.

To avoid the cold go to the field museum and spend as much of the day there as you like. You can eat in their cafeteria if you like. The cafeteria isn't great but it is ok and inside the building. Their dinosaur exhibit is great. Go to Lincoln park and go through the greenhouse - really pretty and nice and warm. Go through water tower mall. Lots of shopping and warm. Shedd aquarium is nice. It is warm too. Dress warm as possible and do the river tour. Starts close to the weighty building bridge. Drive up Clark avenue a mile north of wriggled field dnd vest at rizza's restaurant - best Mediterranean food you'll ever eat. They have a parking garage across the street.

Its shaping to be a mild a Thanksgiving .. 60s! Museum of science and industry is great. Kinda off the beaten path but worth it. Signature Lounge on top the Hancock tower is a must. Kids are welcome and its free to go up.. but you gotta buy at least one drink

I was just there for business 2 weeks ago. First time there and really liked it. My company's office is next door to the Willis Tower. I toke these pictures from the 50th floor of that building. There is basically a whole building above that in the Willis Tower. If you look closely, you can see glass boxes protruding from the side. You can go up there and stand in those and look down. I took this panoramic shot to give an idea of the massiveness of the building. But my coworkers from Chicago recommended going to the top of the John Hancock building (94th floor I think) for better views of the city.

Regardless of weather, I actually love walking along grant park and along lake shore drive.
