If the staff wanted to, they can sign up to 29 in this class.

He is absolutely right about their WR's. Great college numbers but a lot of them do not pan out in the NFL. Ryan Broyles is having a disappointing rookie year.

They don't play agaist elite DB's weekly in the Big12. Easy to put up numbers, not to transition to pros, though.

Spread offenses teach WR's very little about how to play in the NFL besides how to catch. OU receivers catch balls when they are wide open and hardly ever get jammed. They are not use to having to beat the jam and having a cover corner draped all over them while making a catch. They can't run block worth a damn either.

They'll make the numbers work. With attrition and possible grade casualties (recruiting Gardner tells me Baker may not make it), they will be taking more than 25 commits. As far as the scholarships go, I'm sure they have a numbers plan in place.

They can sign 29 players. There is a new rule in place that they can back count. I think a few years ago they only signed 21 and they can back count the players to that year. This subject has been talked about in bunch of threads

there are some questions about back counting as it pertains to either LOI's or initial counters...but you certainly can't back count multiple years though. You can only take 25 LOI's for a given signing class, so whatever you sign over that would have to be early enrollees, subject to whatever back counting rule is in place.

I think we can have 4 count back, 7-8 early enrollees, and a total of 29 for this class. There could be 2-3 not qualify, so it will get interesting at the close, as always.

As Fore said, you can't back count any further than last year. This is not a new rule as you could always back count an EE as long as he fit within the 85/25 limitations. The new rule is 25 LOI limit in Feb. This means we can't sign 26 that will count towards 2013 class with the expectation that one or more will fail to qualify. If you sign 25, assuming they fit under the 85, and one fails to qualify, then an EE the following Jan could be back counted to fill that position if he fits within the 85.

According to a thread on this last week...

A team cannot back count against the 85 total but you can backcount year to year. LSU had 4 academic casualties in the 2012 class. They have positions (last count I saw) for six EE's. Four of these can be counted to 2012. The six EE's are already selected and have been listed in multiple treads here on the RB.
I do not know if this 2013 class gets officially credited with 29 or 25 but in either case LSU can bring in 29.

The 85 limit is the hard cap and the 25 limit is adjustable depending on how many enrolled in the previous class. The 85 limit is never really the issue because that is where attrition factors in such as graduation, dismissals, draft departures, transfers, and medical hardships. Never worry about the 85 limit because that's where the magic happens. Only worry about how many enrolled in the previous class plus the 25 limit of the current class. The max possible for the 2013 class is 29.

We have up to 8 kids that we can backfill if we wanted to. We can count 4 of those back to the 2012 class. Meaning we could make 28 work with zero issue.

If we work the numbers right, we can take up to 29 NLOI's on NSD, though I personally think we won't do that as 2014 is gonna be a "Fam" type of class in state and we will have kids that want to be a part of a class that includes beasts like Noil, Dupree, Quinn and Fornette...

I predict that we sign 28-29 on NSD but only 26-27 actually enroll. A couple won't qualify. The staff will be very selective for the 2014 crop.

The rule is the same as it has been for several years. Nothing has changed. EEs have to count against the current total of 85 regardless of which initial counter limit they count against. That can be accomplished by being under 85 before they enroll, by the EE "replacing" a scholarship graduate, or a combination of the two.

The initial counter limit of 25 is what determines if the EE can count back. If you have less than 25 for that academic year then they can count back.

There are three limits...signee (25), initial counter (25), and total counter (85). They all impact roster management but are independent of one another.

LSU may not take 29, but it isn't because they can't. It would be tough to fit that many under next year's 85.

Plus you can still count back four and maybe carry over some spots to the very good 2014 class. For example....take 26, count back 4 of the EEs, and the 2013 class would have 22 initial counters with room to count back 3 in 2014.

re: Courtney Gardner twitter exchange

From my thread

quote:

I haven't seen anything posted on this, so excuse me if I am late. This is from SS at 24/7. I know there will be plenty of questions on how many signatures LSU can take this year and how scholarships can count back to past signing classes. Well here is your answer... "The NCAA has changed its rule for counting back on scholarships effective this year. The 85 number no longer is a factor. The only number that matters is the number of initial counters. LSU had 21 in 2012 -- four below the minimum. Therefore, LSU will be able to have four players count back to the 2012 limit from the 2013 class. For example. if LSU would bring six early enrollees to school in January, four could count back to 2012. Two would could to the 2013 number. LSU could still sign 23 players in February who would count to 2013. So, essentially, LSU can bring in 29 players in the 2013 class." The 85 man scholarship limit is still imposed so attrition must occur when teams over sign.
