| I got an idea for a cinema chain (Posted on 11/16/12 at 11:24 pm)
How do you think this would work out: How about for $200-$400 (still debating the price), you can receive a membership to a theater and see any movie without paying for the rest of the year? The exception will be midnight showings, where you got to pay and reserve upfront for that. It would make a hell of a Christmas gift for people, and I'd say most people see about 10 films in the theater. Do you think it could be profitable?

Problem is % of box office (90% first week of big movies) goes to studio. Theyd ban their flix from your theater unless you paid them per butt in seat.

Not a problem, for they would have a card and then I'd scan it to know when and what movie they are watching, and then I'd cover the costs for it. Don't see why this would be a turnoff to the studio system.

You'd lose money. I see two movies a week x 50 weeks. 100. You pay 90% standard ticket prices that's 4-500 bucks to studios. For a 2-300$ pass? Concessions are the big source of income to theaters.

No one would buy it because it's such a steep price. Who has time to watch 10 movies in a year? I'm lucky if I see 3 in the summer and 2 in the winter.

Not a chance. You know how many movies people would see with that? People who only go see a handful of movies a year would have no interest in it. I like the idea, it's just not going to happen anytime soon. I believe there are some monthly pass plans out there but they are few and far between and outside of the biggest markets and the few chains that take them, they are useless. Now if I were a smaller movie studio that released say 3-6 movies a year, I would try something like a season pass that tied into certain movie chains. If you buy tickets for all of the movies we offer at once, you save money on the price of each ticket. Like say if Studio X was releasing 5 films in 2013. If you are interested in those films, rather than paying $12 a ticket for them, you can pay $50 upfront and receive a printable pass for each movie. If you aren't interested in one of the movies, you could always sell or even exchange your movie pass.

admission price isn't as big a turnoff to me as concession prices, general douchebaggery from the crowd, and the fact that for good movies I sometimes have to get there 30 minutes early to find a good seat and I am left watching lame shite until the lame previews start. I really think movie theatres should implement assigned seats. If fricking Croatian movie theaters can have it, why can't ours?

For now. It's going to be the third biggest source within three years after in theater advertising (both on screen and business ads in the theater) and ticket prices. I have no idea where homeboy up top gets the idea that big movies net 90% of the first weekend cut for the studios, because I've only heard of one movie ever getting that rate and it was Avatar and it was with smaller theater chains.

I don't go on weekend. Seating. People yelling at the damn screen. Mostly empty on week nights

Uh, I don't know about that. I had that in Turkey and Greece and it sucked. Sitting next to some fat dude smoking. But in London Piccadilly Circus has 3 types of seating sections (which I liked) priced at different ranges. Front, middle tier and upper tier.

How did that pricing work?

Wow. That's a lot of trips to the theater. I've definitely turned into the "I'll wait till it comes out and stream it" guy. Go to the movies once or twice a year. Eta...if you're speaking hypothetically, very few people see 2 movies a week..even with a pass like that. I know tons of people before netflix streaming that would forget about it and have the same 3 movies for a month. Granted, netflix is much less than 300/year

I don't think you are going to get people to fork that money over right now. Also, what about the family of four? They aren't going to buy memberships. They are just going to shell out the cost of the ticket.

They wouldn't be the target demographic. Singles - especially single males under 40 - would be the target for this.

I didn't there even 100 movies out in a year. Now that I think of it there's usually 2-4 per week so there's probably 100-200. can't imagine wanting to see as much as half of the general crap that i put out

I haven't got the math quite worked out, since I'm thinking it will be $200 pass will be what I go for, but you're not the target I have in mind. I'm looking at teenagers and cinephiles.

And that's where it gets brilliant, since while I probably would give them 20% off on concessions, they still have to pay for it. They'll go see a boat load of movies and still buy popcorn and drinks.
