Darrell Hazzell at Kent State
Gary Anderson at Utah State,
Willie Taggert at Western Kentucky
There are probably a couple other coaches I left off that could be added that have turned around bad programs. What are yall's thoughts on hiring coaches from small schools with a losing tradition and limited resources who are able to reestablish the program? Seems like they are used to doing more with less and could benefit from having the unlimited resources of schools like Auburn and Tennessee

Still not a slam dunk. Look at Turner Gill.
But yes, it is not a bad approach. Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer, Art Briles come to mind.
And I think Anderson is a hell of a coach and would succeed anywhere. Great defensive guy.

Based on the list above, you would hope Gill is the exception and not the rule.

When you hire a lower-tier coach, you have to do a lot of research. Ask the question, why are they successful? Have they sustained long-term success? It's a big risk, you could end up with Turner Gill. More often than not, you will hire Turner Gill, but there might be an Urban Meyer in there somewhere.
If I were AD, I'd look at the conference as a whole. Why did this school have success under this coach? And did it have more to do with other teams not being good?

With a guy like Taggart, you can look at his style of play and his coaching lineage and get a good feel for how he'll do going forward. He's built that WKU program from basically the ground up, and he's winning with a style that pretty much no one else on that level is winning with. His teams also don't get intimidated.
Mark Hudspeth has a history of being successful wherever he's been. On the D2 level, as an offensive asst in the SEC, and basically has brought the ULL program to new heights in a very short amount of time.
They're both in the Sunbelt, so you could make the argument that everyone else around them is bad, but the fallacy with that is that every team in the Sunbelt has always been bad. It's only recently that guys are being successful at those schools. I think it says more about Freeze, Malzahn, Hud and Taggart than the competition they face.

That was the S&C guy. Gameday profiled him last week, I didn't really watch much of it, but it's probably on ESPN's website.
ETA: And Hudspeth had success at UNA, so he's familiar with recruiting in the south, particularly Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

I met a UL recruiter at a wedding about a year ago. Hudspeth runs a well oiled machine in Lafayette. I've got all the respect in the world for the guy and his program. He took a dumpster fire team and turned them into a bowl winning team. I think he'd do really well in the SEC, given his background in the South.

It would be interesting. Although, the last guy to precede Terry Bowden as HC turned out pretty well

He was never Head Coach at New Hampshire, he was Oregon OC when he was named Head Coach.

I don't think it's a good comparison to make towards Gill.
He had one winning season before landing a big gig. If anyone has a similar story-line, it's Derek Dooley. One winning season at La Tech.
