| Breakdown: Sight Adjust Colston TD (Posted on 11/16/12 at 10:17 am)
the story What is a “sight adjust” read? Think of the one-step slant or “smoke” route (WR turns to the QB at the snap). Regardless of the play called in the huddle, the QB will give the WR a signal (grab the facemask, tap the hip, etc.) when he sees a large “cushion” (distance between CB and WR) outside of the numbers. Oops, too late Just imagining the fear Breesus can strike into a defender when he surveys the field and starts audibling. Gotta be some "Oh shit, he sees me." moments. If I started listing his strengths, reading defenses at the line and how quickly he can go through progressions (because of how clearly he understands the defense) might be the top of the list.

I have to say i throughly enjoy these breakdown threads. And this:

Defenses have to hate gameplanning for us. And with the emergence of ivory and ingram as of late, im sure they just sit around saying well, what the frick are we gonna do against them now?

was reading some Raiders stuff and came across this, kinda relevant- Considering the Raiders’ breakdowns on the back end in a 55-20 loss to Baltimore, cornerback Michael Huff understands things will have to be tightened up considerably. “It can’t happen this week,” Huff said. “He’s one of the smartest, one of the greatest quarterbacks out there. Pre-snap, he kind of knows already what you’re in, so we’ve got to hopefully disguise a little bit and make him think a little bit and let our pressure get to him.”

There's nothing defenders can do other than disguise their defenses and hope they can get to Brees with a 4-man rush

Beefy mac, whodatfan. Good thing you're on our side. You'd be terrible at sabotaging Brees.

There is nothing in sports that compares to watching a great quarterback pick apart a defense. He and Peyton Manning have to be the funnest to watch at the line. You'll see them calling audibles down to the last second, still able to get the play off. The most obvious times you'll see him use these "sight adjust" reads is close to the end-zone, most often with Graham and Colston because of the match up problems. Most of the time they are looking to isolate either regardless. Just off hand, plays most might remember: Graham vs Falcons (Monday Night Football in Atlanta) on the game winning drive in 2010, quick slant after Brees made the look over to see Graham was isolated, easy. This was similar to the touchdown throw to Shockey in the Superbowl. We also saw this with Graham vs the Giants last season At Home vs Tampa last season - He made a read to Lance Moore where he was isolated in single coverage. Unlike a slant though, It was a fade route from about 5 yards out, beautiful throw. Just gives a look at him. Collinsworth called out the play for Graham vs the Lions in the playoffs. "Graham all alone". Of course Drew make a quick signal, throws it to a wide open Jimmy. Video of all but a few of the touchdowns from last season Lance Moore play: 5:27 mark Jimmy Graham vs Giants 6:53 mark Graham vs Lions (Playoffs) 18:51 Drew is a fricking assassin

Last years game in the dome verses the Texans. Texans dominated the game from the onset and were trying to hold on to a win. They score the go ahead touchdown with about 4 minutes left. The obnoxious Texan fans sitting behind me celebrating a victory early. I looked over to them and said Brees and 4 minutes, really. Drew went with no huddle, empty backfield, called everything at the line. IIRC, it was a drive of >80+ yards for the winning TD. It was a thing of beauty. The look on the faces of the Texan fans was priceless. I did really feel bad for the 9 year old Texan fan celebrating his birthday at the game though, such is life.

I'll cry my eyes out the day he retires from the Saints. He is the kind of player who can walk out there and throw an interception on his first play of the game,..and you're not even worried because you know and have seen his talents, and HE is a lot more aggravated about that than you are. Just have a trust in that man, I have never met him or played for him..But, Id go to war for him. That's my quarterback, man.

One of my favorite parts of watching a Saints game on TV is listening to Brees audible. Sometimes you'll hear something like "Get ready, X" X being a player. Last time I heard this was, "Get ready, Lance" and they connected for a 3rd and long iirc. Just blows my mind. Dude knows exactly what the defense is going to do before he even snaps the ball most of the time.

Sometimes I find myself watching other teams' games with people who really dont watch a lot of football besides saints games. The one common thing i hear people complain about the most, are the throws other quarterbacks make. Drew really has a consistent accuracy that a lot of people have come to take for granted.

I'd prolly go accuracy as his 2nd greatest strength. Certainly the highest as far as physically

I agree, I'll even catch myself being like, "Man,..Drew would have hit that guy". but his ability to read a defense, yeah..it's rare you pull one over on him and if you do, it seems like he wants to make you pay for it haha
