and the death of local businesses. They constantly shriek "buy local buy local buy local" Yet they support high estate taxes which force "local" businesses to sell out when the owner dies. Just my thought for the day.

I'll bet they all own union manufactured televisions, stereos, and mobile phones as well.

The first $5 million is exempt and the tax does not apply to property passing to a spouse. The top tax rate after the exclusion is 35%. Most people will never be affected by the estate tax. The reason a lot of businesses don't survive is that the heirs want cash, not a business that they have to run.

That is fixing to change Jan 1, 2013. Unless extended it will go to 1 million exclusion and 55% tax.

Payable in cash 9 months after the death. Soooo...if all of ones assets are tied up in a business, I guess they better hope the business isnt worth over 1 million dollars. amirite.

Most people will never be affected
Should we apply this rationale to other areas??

Do you own a business? Or does your family? If not, STFU, you have no idea what you are talking about...

Of course he doesn't. Like the majority of leftists, he hasn't a clue about business or economics. The stupidity of the intellectual elite shocks me daily here.

Yes we should! Let's apply it to: 1) Union laws. Let's repeal them. Unions shouldn't exist and most people will never be affected. 2) Affirmative action. We're in a post racial US anyways and most people will never be affected. 3) Voter ID Laws. Who doesn't have an ID? and most people will never be affected. 4) Welfare. Most people will never be affected. 5) Marijuana laws. Most people will never be affected. 6) Gun control laws. Most people will never be affected. etc;

I don't think anyone seriously expects Congress to not extend the current rates and exemptions. Let's hope they can get it done without the tea party brinkmanship that we saw last year over the debt ceiling.

Both sides insist they want a deal before January, but a rising chorus of voices, especially Democrats, say they would rather go over the cliff than accept a deal that raised too few taxes while extracting too many cuts, especially to Medicare and Medicaid.

um. why do you think this? It is being planned for all over the place. Just because you don't have the assets necessary to worry about these changes, doesn't mean that those that do don't worry about it either. It seems to me you like to shrug off any concern that doesn't directly affect you.

Yeah and the irony is they also like big centralized command and control federal government. Kind of like big corporations. And they hate when lower level governments have power (state and local levels). Kind of like local businesses.

What difference does that make? The business and other assets belong to the person who built (yes, built) them and has already been taxed.

Maybe so but for those of us affected it is a nightmare. You go from having a family business that is paid for to facing millions in debt just because someone dies and uncle sam wants a piece.
