| Some smart AD will hire Charlie Strong (Posted on 11/15/12 at 6:36 pm)
He's proven the kind of HC he is. He was a good DC in the SEC.

He's been at Louisville for 3 years now, and they have gotten better each year. He has proven he can get good players from Florida to come to Louisville, and has proven himself to be a quality SEC DC. So, yes, I agree with you. The only problem I see is that it's hard to tell exactly how good he is as a HC, because he's in a crappy conference, so you only have to be average to be the best team in that league. That's the only question I see about him. His teams play pretty sound football. I was convinced Arkansas would chase him, and maybe they will after the regular season is done.

I agree and i think Strong would be an excellent recruiter in the SEC. I'd be concerned if he landed in Lee County.

He'll be great in the SEC when he makes it back IMO. That said, it's not a matter of ADs being smart enough to offer. It's a matter of whether he wants to leave Louisville. They're willing to pay a pretty penny to keep him and it's fairly well known he's still annoyed by being passed over for some SEC HC jobs before.

The problem with hiring Strong is the $$$ you would have to pay him for him to leave UL. His contract runs through 2018 @ $2.5 million per year, plus one million bonuses if he is still with UL in 2015 & 2016, 200K bonuses in '17 &'18. Thats $17.4 million not counting what his buyout would be (it was $2.5 last year) So if you are going to hire Strong you are going to have to give him a $20 million contract. Now is Strong worth that kind of money?

If Tennessee is not willing to give out a $20 million contract to their head coach ($4 million for 5 years), they've hired the wrong guy. Money shouldn't be the issue. I really like Strong. Write the f'n check.

If you like him that much go for it, I just thought a school could get a better coach for $20 million

Agree completely. The Big East doesn't have an extensive history of producing great head coaches.

Honestly, and I hate Louisville with the fire of a thousand suns, I think Strong actually feels indebted to them because they gave him first HC job. Thus far he's been pretty straightforward about shooting down rumors and he doesn't seem like the one to BS. The following things are going to hinge on whether Strong leaves Louisville: 1) Is Louisville in contention for a Big 12 bid? There are a lot of people that seem to think they're next in line. If so it makes sense that he would stay. If they don't this would probably be the biggest factor in him leaving. 2) Is he comfortable with Louisville's commitment to football? I tend to think so even if they're doing it by naming their facilities after half the fast food chains in a 50 mile radius. 3) Is he still a "woman scourned" over getting passed over for some major SEC HC jobs? There's a lot of people who say he is and as a result certain schools aren't even getting a look.
