| Homebrewing: Help on what type of stout to brew (Posted on 11/16/12 at 8:54 am)
Hi all. My name is Bug, and i haven't brewed in over 2 months **crowd: Hi Bug** Ok, so i haven't brewed in awhile because i just moved into my first house. I want to brew a stout. I have yet to brew a stout before and i have 3 types to choose from. 1) Oatmeal Stout. Tried and true, i love a good oatmeal stout. Sam smith may be one of my favorite beers. 2) Bourbon Barrel Stout: I've been having a bourbon barrel for about 5 months now, and have yet to use it. It's been resting in a sanitizing solution. If i go this route, i'm going buy some cheap whiskey and fill it up again, before secondarying into the barrel. 3) Coffee Stout: Found a great recipe in Zymurgy for a good coffee stout. Interested in trying it. I am leaning more towards bourbon barrel at the moment. Really want to use that barrel, and use some good woodford reserve for the actual brew. Your thoughts?

Sounds like you have already made up your mind.

You didn't buy the bourbon barrel to take up space. Use it! I'd go with a big imperial stout and secondary in the barrel.

This. After our Porter did so well in the bourbon barrel I want to brew a big RIS and let it finish in the barrel for a month or two.

OK, ordered the AHS Oaked Imperial Whiskey Stout All-Grain kit. I will be brewing next Sunday. I'm going to have to shake off the cobwebs. It's been awhile. LINK I went with the double yeast pitching method. As i said, it's been awhile since i've done anything but drink good beer. Do i add both of my wyeast packs at the same time, if i'm double pitching? Or do i wait for the first pack to do their job, then add the second? I will be making a starter, as per usual.

Ok. I get to use my giant 2L erlinmeyer flask finally. Just need to find a stopper. Also, anyone have any plans for a cheap and easy stir plate?

Sanitized tin foil is fine for starters and fermentation in general but I believe Northern Brewer sells some foam type stopper for starters.
