Unfortunately none of those guys are giving up their jobs to go to Fayetteville. We know what we need, but it's not always easy to get that. Petrino and Pattersons of the world can have moderate success because they do coach up what we're able to get. Sometimes you have to wonder how much is someone like Pete Carroll a great recruiter, or is it the location and the fact that Snoop Dogg and Will Ferrell are on the sidelines chumming it up with players every practice. Is it the job or the person? Would he be as effective in Fayetteville as he was in LA?

16 true freshman? did he skip recruiting for 3 years? ... recruiting falls on the head coach ...
They lost 9 starters on D from last year, plus they had alot of injuries this year and of course the drug bust thing awhile back booted some guys on D. Their D still isn't bad, 22nd in Total D nationally.

Sometimes I wonder if these schools know what kind of coach they need. If you are a school with a ton of talent in your backyard you either want a guy who can kill it with Xs and Os or a guy that connects well enough with players to be a great motivater, because you don't need a recruiter when talent falls in your lap. (Looking at you USC.) But if you are in the SEC and in a lesser state when it comes to recruiting (Arkansas, Tennessee) you want to hire a recruiting guru first and foremost. I respect Patterson a lot, and once in a while he has gotten a recruiting skin on the wall. But he is a much better developer of talent than a recruiter of talent. I put him in the same category as Tuberville. That is not that kind of coach Arkansas needs. Pete Carroll is the type of coach Arkansas needs. Edit: although, I will say putting Patterson together with an excellent recruiting assistant under him could make for an excellent hire overall.
You see the situation much better than a majority of our fans.

...very informative article here by stefan stevenson of the ft. worth star telegram on Big 12 coaching salaries, including in-depth on gary patterson > i think if jeff long is willing to make gary patterson the highest paid coach in college football, there is zero chance he will not accept the offer. quite simply, it would be flat stupid to turn it down. i don't think patterson is stupid. to put your name above brown, saban, and stoops as #1 pay man equals coaching prestige in the 1st degree. This sounds a lot like Petrino. He wasn't a good recruiter, either. he was more of an Xs and Ox & developer. I'd love it if we could have both. But if we can't, I'll take a tactician. A lot of people have thrown out this $6MM/yr figure for Arkansas' coach. I've always wondered if that was, maybe, the entire coaching budget being offered. "We'll give you $6MM/yr to put together your staff. However much for you, however much for your DC, OC, etc, etc...but no more than $6MM." I'd rather we spent $4MM on a HC and had a badass DC than $6MM on a coach with some chump calling our defense.
