| Primo vs Green Egg vs Kamado Joe (Posted on 11/15/12 at 6:18 am)
Didn't want to hijack Cajun Alum's thread. Please I need a comparison, pros and cons, between Primo, Kamado Joe and Green Egg. I am leaning toward KJ ClassicJoe, 256 sq in cooking surface. I did not find a thread on this board and I trust advice here when it comes to cooking.

I have the exact KJ you are talking about. I really love it. I do recommend getting the grill extender, because it increases your grilling space. IMHO the KJ and the egg are pretty close. They are nearly the exact same size, with the same accessories. The primo is larger and has a firebox divider, but it was almost too big for everyday grilling. Don't get me wrong, it is very nice, but just too big for my needs. If I'm not mistaken the KJ is a bit less than the BGE and comes with more stuff standard. I think it is better built, but really you can't go wrong with any of them. Once you start grilling on. Ceramic, you will never go back to any other grill. Trust me my stainless steel Holland is collecting dust in the shed

Thanks Lambda. This place is offering the KJ for $799+tax. It includes the heat deflector thing, a heat glove and a 20# bag of charcoal. It comes with the stand of course. Yes, I was thinking the Primo or the Big Joe would be too much for us. It is me and the wife usually, but we have guests/family and sometimes cook for up to 6 adults + kids. I plan to keep the old chargrill for backup.

I can understand not spending the money on the larger sized grill, but can't agree that the grill is just too large for everyday use. It isn't that much larger, and in my opinion it is better to have and not need...

I have the Kamado Joe and love it....like others have said once you cook on ceramic you'll never go back. Just fired mine up last night and had a perfectly seared T-Bone. Got the grill up to 600 degrees, 30 seconds on each side, then closed the lid for 5 minutes.

Your main difference between those 3 will be accesories. they are all of equal high quality. i have a large BGE but im sure i'd be happy with any of those 3.

Primos come in multiple sizes, just like any other so to say the primos is too big is misleading. I'm a total newb, but I'm glad I have the XL, because it works for small family meals and is big enough for a Viking feast too! I believe everyone will recommend the type they have and you will be happy with any.

if looking to save some money have a look at the Char-Griller Kamado Kooker - Kroger & Lowes carry it - although getting harder to find. Amazon link gets good reviews in a BBQ forum i read: BBQ Forum Link

If you can get 5 or more years out of it with similar results to the others, it looks like a bargain. I found it for less here, even with shipping. LINK

I saw one of those a while bag. When I lifted the lid it felt about half the weight of the lid of my BGE. the ceramic is much thinner.

Primo all the way for me. You have the space if you need/want it, but when you're cooking small just use one side with the fire box divider. Can also do true indirect cooks without deflector plates using fire box divider. Made in USA. Just don't buy one of the cheap imitators. The brands you mentioned have great quality and warranties. Spend the few extra bucks, a good ceramic grill can last you decades. Most people scoff at the price, but it's a purchase that will last you a very long time.

Yesterday I looked at another brand called Grill Dome. The popular size was the 18" diameter cooking surface. The price is $950 for the cooker and stand, which is the same price I got at the BGE store. I think it has more headroom in the dome. However, the gasket is very thin and the stand is flimsy and rocks. But they offer 4 colors(stopped making green). The KJ and BGE products appear to be better quality IMO. Grill Dome

Athens, your observations are correct GD does appear to be of lesser quality all the way around. I looked at them when I was shopping. KJ comes in a bunch of colors including, or at least used to include, purple and gold. I have the black, but they also have red, burnt orange, and now stainless. I do think the stainless is a much bigger grill than the classic Joe. With the big three( BGE, KJ, and Primo) it really comes down to what you like. Warranties are all about the same as well as quality. They are all going to cook like champs.

I completely disagree. What makes you say that?

I disagree. All stainless steel hardware, thickest ceramic of any cooker, and a very heavy duty hinge.

THIS. And the gasket is MUCH better than the stock BGE. I've done A LOT of research on all the different ceramic cookers and the GD took the cake for me. I'm 99% done my custom built table. I just need to buy the GD now..

The gasket on the Grill Dome was wrinkled and very thin, almost paper thin. It was very noticeable to me. I do think the ceramic is thicker though.

Interesting. They don't seem to have near the gasket issues of BGE. I'm unbiased, BTW. I don't own any, just been researching for a while.
