Why in the hell do bakers need to be unionized? Isn't most of the shite automated nowadays anyway? Can they just get any ding dong off the street to operate these machines?

In an age of online job hunting and employee"at-will" work agreements, why do unions need to exist in the first place? These workers are free to leave if they want....

frick the Unions! I got in an argument the other day with a teacher friend about Unions... She's not part of one, but of course she attempted to defend them. "Maybe you should look at it from their point of view". We then shifted to the Chicago fiasco from a few months back and she began to defend them. Didn't take long to change her views after providing her with the facts.

So, please correct me if I'm wrong, because this story is a little confusing... Basically Hostess went into bankruptcy for the second time in 10yrs. They just emerged from Bankruptcy court with the court imposed terms, but the Union is now refusing to honor those terms?

Which begs the question, are you really a baker or a machine operator? I would think that real bakers and pastry chefs across the world would be a little put off at calling these people either bakers or pastry chefs.

the unions... I agree with Hostess on this one. It would be great if Hostess could hold off on selling for 6 months just so the Union members could sit out of work and feel the pain of others who aren't part of a piece of shite organization.

A bunch of union bakers are taking it in the balls this morning. Hostess is pulling the rug out from under thier feet, and is doing exactly what they said would be the repurcussion of the continuance of the strike, and they have no ability to fight this action. Oops our bad!!

How do you think the Teamsters who accepted wage cuts feel about the Bakers who refused them now that the company has closed its doors? How many jobs for union bakers do you think are out there? How many non-union bakeries do you think are going to hire ex-union bakers who refused to make concessions in order to keep their employer alive? This could get entertaining.

The union bakers are taking it in the balls from themselves. They were selfish and now they will be contributing to the unemployment rate. "The rich will be poorer, but the poor will also be poorer" Can't ignore the laws of mathematics. Who wins in this situation? Nobody.

That is the way I read it. The "bluff" called because the union leaders thought there is always more money held by the company. This is always my biggest problem with the status of current unions. The Leaders are not damaged, buy the rank and file are out jobs. FYI - 90 % of my employees are members of IBEW. My guys are great and that is why we have been successful. Every major problem with the union has been on the national issues or an employee called off the books. There is a reason they are on the books - they suck and have no work ethic.

They should look at this as an opportunity to learn how to become a real baker or pastry chef. Maybe rack up huge amounts of debt to go to school and sacrifice any semblance of a life and family, spend 70 and 80 hours a week busting their asses in a real kitchen for people who probably won't even appreciate it for what it is they work to put out, but they can be proud to say they created. Have their arse chewed out and told they are garbage by a head chef, and put up with all kinds of nonsense associated with working in a professional kitchen. Basically, earn the frickin title Baker or pastry chef by learning what it's really like to work your arse off for little in return in the grand scheme of things and because you love what you do.

Chairman of Hostess on CNBC right now. Said that the union striking is 30% of workforce and they have not heard from Union Leadership in over a month. Bakers did not have a secret vote on the strike like the Teamsters.

Hate to see it happen, but this is real life and the unions and union members need to understand that you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

They don't give a shite... Like I said, I hope all of these union members sit out of work and are hurt financially. You lay with the devil, you get what you deserve.

From the Hostess statement:
quote:
On Nov. 12, Hostess Brands permanently closed three plants as a result of the work stoppage. On Nov. 14, the Company announced it would be forced to liquidate if sufficient employees did not return to work to restore normal operations by 5 p.m., EST p.m., Nov. 15. The Company determined on the night of Nov. 15 that an insufficient number of employees had returned to work to enable the restoration of normal operations. The BCTGM in September rejected a last, best and final offer from Hostess Brands designed to lower costs so that the Company could attract new financing and emerge from Chapter 11. Hostess Brands then received Court authority on Oct. 3 to unilaterally impose changes to the BCTGM’s collective bargaining agreements. Hostess Brands is unprofitable under its current cost structure, much of which is determined by union wages and pension costs. The offer to the BCTGM included wage, benefit and work rule concessions but also gave Hostess Brands’ 12 unions a 25 percent ownership stake in the company, representation on its Board of Directors and $100 million in reorganized Hostess Brands’ debt.
Unions just cost us dessert.
