Smaller and faster linebackers and scholarship limits.

IE Miami in the 1980s

the defenses learned to stop it. first of all, the defenses weren't built to stop it and they only faced it once a year. then after much success, teams began to focus on it in both recruiting and coaching and then stopped it cold. teams had to adapt and quit using it.

Bear Bryant couldn't have 200 5*s on his roster anymore.

re: Why did the Wishbone go out of style?
So it had nothing to do with rule changes making it easier to pass?

re: Why did the Wishbone go out of style?
People got bored with it. The principles are still being used just not the formation.

ETA: people think you have to throw to be exciting and effective now. If you notice Spurriers teams at UF they were more dangerous with Taylor and Rhett, especially when close to 1000 yds rushing. It will return just like the Single Wing has now.

Urban Meyer based his offense around the veer

so that's something.

They went away from the wishbone longggg before the rules made it easier to pass

No not really. The Bone was used until mid 80's when rule changes started. The Colts used the Bone with Clarence Verdin and Eric Dickerson in late 80's on the Goal line.

Football runs in cycles. I think the main reason is The big time High school recruits want to go to schools that will prepare/showcase them for the NFL. It took Georgia Tech to the Orange Bowl when they still had leftover NFL talent on their roster the first few years.

Alabama wasn running it much in bear's last year.

The basic principles are the foundation of a lot of offenses...

Tight set w three backs is easier to defend w speed...

Not out of style just highly evolved

When run well, it's fun to watch. When a QB pitches at the last possible second as he's being hit, it's a thing of beauty.

None of the "teams figured it out" or "recruited for it" BS is true. Offense go out of style because the coaches who run those offenses go out of style.

The option went nowhere, it's all out the shotgun. It shall come back again.

I loved CU when running the I-Bone with Hagan, Bienemy, Pritchard, and company. Then Les Steckle convince Bill McCartney they had to stop and throw it everywhere.

Baylor ran the Stack I with JJ Joe that was freaking crazy, as it used Veer and Counter option a lot.

This.

Give me any offense that makes you account for one additional player, namely the qb. If I have my pick of the litter as far as athletes go and get to pick the scheme, I'd go with the system that makes the defense account for one more player. It's math.

However, if you run wishbone or shotgun spread, you don't get the pick of the litter. That's the problem with it. Of course, I'd probably go with the shotgun version because it stresses a defense more because of the ability to throw out of it.

A. the pros don't run it

B. it's all well and good until you're trailing by two scores in the 4th quarter
