I think someone lied to him. That's highly illegal. A union member may opt to contribute to a PAC, which in turn may make the contribution, or a union may endorse a candidate, but dues cannot be directly funneled to a political candidate.

Fail. The unions would love for non-union workers not to get the benefits of their negotiations. It is the law in less-than-unionized states that force it to work this way so that Unions can't pressure people to join against their will, which they were notorious for doing before these laws.
ETA: In other words, that all-encompassing negotiating effect is a statute in place to reduce unions' powers in the more conservative states. Unions deserve no credit for that device being in place. It's put there to frick unions over from a membership/recruitment standpoint.

I'm pretty sure it's true. I believe they are in the steelworkers union? I'll have to ask him about that. I think they talked about it in a meeting and that's how it came to light.

In they hey day of the unions most manufacturing was located in states like Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania aka the Rust Belt. So it should be no surprise that there are a lot of pro union people in the North.
However, the unions got too greedy and companies decided to move south where labor costs are lower. So it should be no surprise that there are more anti union in the south.

Only partly correct, see closed shop v. open shop rules. The "unions" don't give a shite if anyone else benefits off of what they negotiate for their members. You guys have seen too many old movies or something, but sure don't seem to have been around the US work environment very long.

I wish it were that easy. My union gives very large sums of money to the party that is MOST against closing the boarders and sending illeagals back across the boarder.
If what you are saying is true then they are tremendous hypocrites......the union I mean.
