IIRC emissions stuff is warrantied until 100k. i got my o2 sensors replaced free of charge at 98k

I am at 97k and I keep getting o2 sensor check engine light codes. How would one go about getting this for free? Go to a Lexus dealership? (I have an '04 Lexus es330).

So I CAN get an inspection sticker. The place on Jefferson told me they would fail me if we did the inspection. I will try another place.

Wrong as frick. If you have an emissions problem, it will fail.

Go buy a $45 code reader from autozone and clear the codes. drive around for 50 miles. if the CIL doesn't not come back on, go get inspected immediately and you will pass.

Assuming the check engine light is an emissions problem.

That's the way you're suppose to feel.

just about anything is an emissions problem. I called the LA official office of vehicle inspections when I was throwing a transmission code. They said I would fail because irregular shifting contributed to lower MPG and that was an emissions problem.

Hugo, all emissions stations in LA are OBDII compliant and will fail you for any OBDII code set except for transmission codes.

To the OP,it sounds like the quote to repair your problem is way too high.
I'd get a.second opinion

You do know changing out oxygen sensors on a 2007 Tahoe isn't all that hard. This is what your going to need

the part,
liquid wrench
oxygen sensor removal tool ($20 at most)
wrench
Jack stands and Jack

There are 4 sensors, figure out which one it is and just change it.

Bad O2 sensors will affect mpg

Just a FYI those sensors start going at around 100k. I'd change all 4 of them while your under there.

Do I pay the 1700 dollars to get my " check engine light" turned off so I can get my sticker, or just bite the bullet and get the new car

It would be a cold day in hell before I paid $1700 so I could get some BS Inspection sticker. It would be an even colder day in hell if needing a sticker made me purchase a new car.

Go try a few inspection stations..you should be able to find one that will not care.

You should be able to find a guy who has a programmer to get rid of the light give him $20..look on Chevy forums or something..lots of nice ppl around.

Bottom line..do not let a BS inspection sticker tax make you pay $1700, if you car runs fine.

Disconnect the battery and the light may stay off long enough to get the sticker.

re: "Check engine Light"

I have an 03 GMC Sierra and my mom has a GMC Yukon. Both trucks have had the exact same issue you described. The fix I found saved my mom about $750 that a repair shop wanted to "replace" the sensor.

The problem that I have found is a dirty oxygen sensor, as many posters have described. The fix is actually very simple. Get a can of Throttle Bottle cleaner (get it an any auto parts place for about $8). Pop your hood, use a flathead screwdriver to release the hose clamp that connects the black plastic air intake into your throttle body (google or youtube it if you are unsure). Once you have the black plastic part pulled off, you will see a metal flapper. You will be able to push it open with your finger. Get an old toothbrush and some rags. Spray the hell out of the inside of throttle body, using the tooth brush to scrub as much black gunk out as you can. Use at least half the can of the cleaner.

Once you have it cleaned out, reattach the air intake and start it up. It will take about 3 or 4 tries before the engine will turn over, don't panic that is normal, it will start. Typically the check engine light will go off on its own in a day or two once the computer sees that the problem is fixed. However, you can unplug the battery and leave it off for 30 minutes if you want to reset it manually.

Sorry for the long post, but this has been an issue that I have helped several people with GMC and Chevy trucks with over the past 2 years or so. Hope it helps.

Move to Arkansas, we don't participate in the scam of paying someone $20 for a sticker because my windshield wipers work.

Great post and I would add:

Do not
get the cleaner on your paint.
Spray it in and let it sit for 30 minutse or so. Makes it easier.

Yeah, I think I've seen a reduction in mpg since the light came on.
