Whats funny about this thread is as you get older some of you will have kids with various mental disabilities and you will cry to someone with a psych degree to get them fixed or you want special accomodations for them. Some of you will be turned down for a job because someone with a psyc degree created a test that you cant pass. Some of you will develop addictions or your friends will and once again crying to someone with a psyc degree will ensue. Some of you will endure traumatic brain injury and a doctor will refer you to someone with a bull shite degree. A sales executive will use techniques invented by someone with a psyc degree to take your money in exchange for an inferior product. Or worse yet a political campaign designed with a psyc degree will convince you to vote against your own interests.
It would seem that a lot can come from bull shite.

I was a ZOOL major and was on track to finish a semester early.
So I did a couple summers and an intersession and picked up a pysch degree on the side literally in my spare time.
Thats how hard it is.

I really should have asked "are these undergrads who are majoring in psychology, with no real plans for grad school, total idiots, or just idiots?" I know it's not good for job potential, but just how bad is it if you aren't getting a masters or m.d.?

id say 2 years of entry level work in psych/behavioral health with NO DEGREE is worth more that a 4 year degree in psych with no relevant work experience. so, its pretty bad.

yes, and they dont automatically mean 6 figures straight out of school. maybe somewhere on the east coast or in a blue state or major city, maybe. but if you are talking about Louisiana, the pay for mental health just inst there straight out of school. It is very possible to make 6 figures as a career progresses, but it require YEARS of networking and establishing oneself in a community while carving a niche.
not trying to slam you man, but to think that someone with a phD in clinical psych will make 6 figures straight out of school in Lousiana is naive. if you want the quickest route to 6 figures in mental health, get a nursing degree, then get a masters in nursing to become a psychiatric nurse practioner. Otherwise, 6 figures is a pipe dream because a.) health insurance reimbursement rates are not that high- (think 60k-70k per annum that route,) and b.) private out of pocket pay is a feast or famine business model that is very treacherous, and not suited for someone straight out of school.

Psych is one of my majors, I am not going to grad school, I have many job opportunities presently with Federal law enforcement. On top of being my career of choice, the locality pay based on where they send me on top of the salary and benefits, its not bad pay either.
I know I'm in the minority here, but just saying you can have a good job with a psych degree.

no one pursuing higher education in a learning institution is an idiot. Bar none. Whether or not they are doing it for the wrong reasons is a separate discussion. But to call someone pursuing a degree an idiot based on the degree he chose is asinine.
You get what you put into college. Some people go the easy route. There are kids skidding by in business and science classes without much effort. Just because it may be easier to skid through a Psyc class doesnt mean everyone in the major took it for bull shite. And it doesnt make the kids trying hard in that class any less valued. And it doesnt mean the classes are worthless.
