To the all mighty OT,
My check engine light is on and my inspection sticker is expired as of Oct 31st. Do I pay the 1700 dollars to get my " check engine light" turned off so I can get my sticker, or just bite the bullet and get the new car. Not an OT baller but right now I have no car note and the Tahoe runs great. I was planning on getting something around summer time next yr.
For you mechanics, the problem is Oxygen Sensor, brake light sensor, and my gas guage is messed up. Its an 07 by the way

My check engine light has been on for 5 years.
No problems.

O2 Sensor is the biggest scam in the entire automotive industry, and that says a lot.

Just ride dirty, man.
You could get caught 10 times and still come out cheaper than $1700. At least I think... don't know what the fine is these days.

They will not fail your inspection for a check engine light if you live in Louisiana.

When mine came on I popped the hood and checked the engine and it was there. Glad that light came on so I could make sure it did not disappear on me.

I think Autozone can actually reset it for you for free.
My 03 S-10 that I had for years before I sold it a few months ago had a check engine light that kept coming back. I have a code reader that can clear the codes out so I just kept clearing it. 
My catalytic converter was shot, so every few weeks it would throw the light and I would reset it.

IIRC emissions stuff is warrantied until 100k.
i got my o2 sensors replaced free of charge at 98k

Buy a $20 OBDII reader and reset the error code when you pull in to the inspection station.

I've had my Avalanche inspected at multiple places and not once have they mentioned the check engine light.

If it is anything like my toyota 4 runner from a few years back, just disconnect the battery cables and re-connect. Resets the check engine for a bit. Out of sight out of mind.

Owned a 1999 Mazda 626 until 2007. Check Engline Light was on from around 2002 until the day I sold it.
