| What makes your average southern man anti-union? (Posted on 11/15/12 at 12:11 pm)
I am a part of this trend. I think there was a time and place for them (ie, The Jungle), but that they serve more as a hinderance than a positive force these days. So what is it about the southern upbringing & history that makes us so opposed to unions when a large majority of the north is in favor of them?

The south didn't really have them and aren't as familiar with them. I know plenty of southern people that are pro union - they are the ones in unions. I know plenty of northern people that are against unions. They are the ones against them. I don't think it is a south v north thing.

It isn't adversarial like that, but there are some definite contrasts between the regions towards unions. Just look at the labor laws.

No idea why the views are so divided by region. Perhaps because one of the bigger unions (UAW) has it's industry based in the north. Also, Unions are largely (not always) associated with industry which is something the North has always been more involved in than the South.

THis is the familiarity thing I was referring to earlier. If you had generations of folks working in unions, you probably wouldn't be as opposed to them.

IDK why but I am also Anti-Union. My Grandpaw was big in the Union back when it was strong, but he has always been a shady character. That was back when the Union used to strong arm ppl and actually benefit the working man by getting them higher wages. This day, seems like unions contain more ppl wanting something for nothing or them feeling entitled to a share in profits before they actually work. Southerns have always been hard working ppl that really depend on no one but lean on friends and family to get by. We seem to never ask for help outside of our families. Seems like Northers do not follow this mentality. They seem to want from the outside (Employer, Government) to hand out for them.

While this only a generalization, I believe Southerners have a more central idea of interpersonal fairness and trust when it comes their agreements, both personal and business-related. Sort of my-word-as-my-bond type of thinking. Therefore, we are less likely to enter into business deals with the intent to exploit people or employees, or feel the need to organize to be protected from such exploitation. We are more trusting in nature, for better or worse. Therefore, unions seem to be an innately strange institution because it forms out of distrust that does not have a stronger foothold here. That's just my take.

I respectfully disagree. As a whole, I would say this is true. There's probably also a correlation between "Red" States and anti-union / "Blue" States and pro-union.

Union dues went to obamas campaign. That should be enough to piss off any southern man.

Completely agree. During The Jungle days unions were about improving working conditions and all that. Remember that story a few days after Sandy hit about electrical line workers from Alabama not being allowed to work in New Jersey because they were not a part of their union? Unions!

frick unions, they're the reason domestic automakers can't provide a quality product like Japanese automakers.. If there were no unions to milk Ford/GM we could put that extra $2,000-3,000 of quality parts into the vehicles

The Hostess story from today just talked about how Hostess shutdown a few bakeries and got rid of 5000 employees because their union wouldn't accept a deal that would have allowed them to keep their jobs. That's just utter stupidity.

A heritage of independence. Basically the same thought process that started the civil war.
