Out of curiosity, what do you think the purpose of college is?

Do you scoff and laugh at a plumber or construction worker who is generally interested in sociology and obtains a degree in such subject purely out of a desire to pursue knowledge, while never seeking a career from it?

Correct. Psychiatrists go to med school. Psychologists pursue PhDs. (I believe)

Never date/talk/bed/anything with a girl that is a Psychology major. I promise. They are trying to figure themselves out, but will shift their issues on you. I promise.

I am 100% not trolling, i believe that with all my heart, and yes, i was a Poli Sci major with a minor in history, which most science majors shite on and laugh at because they consider it easy, when i know plenty of them who could never hold an argument with me about the workings of our government, the reasons for the founding of our country, and don't have the ability to write a concise and substantive 40 page paper on the parallel structure of state vs federal governments.

ETA.
autocorrect is poop sometimes

Well if you really aren't trolling, I think the purpose of college is to attain a desirable skill or trade that gives you the opportunity to make a good living for you and your family.

Academia has no scheduled purpose, but varies with the practical or romantic nature of the person participating in it. And even within those general characteristics are subsets... some believe that it is practical to digest information, while others merely see it as a means to economic livelihood, for example.

But the institution need not declare its mission to be one size fits all. There is no harm in varied motivations for seeking the same educational service. One problem is that some students are content to claim that "knowledge is its own reward" while pursuing a B.A., but shift their perspective once they can no longer float in academic limbo wherein their fates are determined by credit hours and money that seemingly comes from nowhere. Instead of recognizing and stowing their own hypocrisy, they project their frustration onto the universities that cradled them.

re: Is psychology a bull s. major?

Although Sophandros was attempting to troll earlier in this thread, he did make a good point, that I somewhat agree with.

"There are no bull shite majors, only bull shite people."

While I believe that the substance of majors can be labeled as bullshite, it is after all, a matter of what the person taking those classes puts into it.

In my case (PR major), I put forth minimal effort and still managed to make As and Bs. However, I did not seriously pursue a career in that field, because I knew I wanted to go to law school. There were several of my classmates that really got involved around the community, joined student PR organizations and really put their all into their classes; they landed jobs after graduating.

While their successes prove the latter part of my theory, it doesn't change the fact that the substance in the class is generally perceived as "easy" by the better majority of the student body. I really believe that it's difficult NOT to make at least a 3.0 in that major.

But to each his own.

To your friends' defense, many of the "analysts" and "experts" on ESPN aren't journalists, but former players with their own opinions.

I know a few pre-meds who go the Psychology route b\c the classes are pretty easy and it gives you enough electives to get your pre-reqs without taking extra classes.

Yes its bull shite and easy

re: Is psychology a bull s. major?

The problem is the conversation goes like this:

B.S.- All B.A.s are worthless and stupid.

B.A. - No they aren't. Not everyone cant be a scientist, some legit professions come from them, and the pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake is a wonderful thing. We can coexist and the world needs us both.

B.S. - Nope real life application of your major to the job you hold the rest off your life is the only reason for college, and science, engineering, and business are the only legitimate career paths in life.

B.A. - why does it matter to you what nonscientists do? Isn't everyone entitled to happiness and education? Can't there be room for.everyone?

B.S. - no. My major taught me that there is a right and a wrong answer to everything and anything. And there is no such thing as grey area or multiple correct answered. My major is right, confirmed by a statistic in job application in society, therefore your major is wrong and stupid. It is unnecessary and the funding for your department should be cut and the options for "non scientists" extinguished from society.

B.A. - i respectively disagree.

B.S. - well you would because you are dumb and majored in bullshite

Or something like that. It is evident in every one of these threads

quote:

So, it's pretty obvious who on here has a Bull shite major.

Business, Engineering, and Basic Sciences account for 95% of real degrees.

Here's a test: If you disagree with the above statement, you have a Bull shite degree.

I hold a degree in Mathematics.

quote:

Also, to the idiot who said "if you're going to law school your bachelors doesn't matter", look at the employment rates and figures on business and engineering undergrads with law degrees vs everyone else and come back.

I live in the real world and have for a long time, and I know many people with various undergraduate degrees who now hold law degrees and do just fine.

If you're going to school in order to get a job, go to trade school.
