Philip Seymour Hoffman and Gary Oldman are probably the two best answers. Here's a fun fact a lot of you might not know about Gary Oldman. He uses a different accent in just about every movie he does. Because of that he lost his English accent sometime last year and had to work with a voice coach to get it back.

Oh oh oh Leonardo Dicaprio and Denzel. They don't play the same character in every movie! Seriously though, I'd probably pick PSH

Brad Pitt is somebody that gets no respect when it comes to being diverse. He is a great character actor. Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club, SNATCH, The Assasination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford, Burn After Reading, Inglorious Basterds, The Curious Case of Benjamen Button. He has a lot of other good movies but those are some he had to step outside the box a good bit and showed his versatility as an actor.
Agreed. After 12 Monkeys he became one of my favorite actors.

Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman are all great choices. I think Tom Hanks works to a certain extent (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, Terminal), but not as much as those three. And before Ed Norton mailed it in with his career, he did some amazing work with very different characters.

easily Gary Oldman for me I dont see him when he's acting. I see his character Brad Pitt is great and a favorite of mine, but I still see Pitt for the most part when I'm looking at his characters
