| Is this ethical? (Posted on 11/14/12 at 11:19 pm)
Shane kills Otis on Walking Dead For those of you familiar with the Walking Dead, you probably remember this scene. If not, here's the context: A boy has been shot, and without medical treatment, will almost surely die. The two in this scene go to a nearby school to get medical supplies. At the point where this brief scene begins, both men have one bullet left, and their escape from the school looks certain. As you will see, Shane uses his last bullet to shoot Otis, thereby stalling the zombies as they feed on him. Meanwhile, Shane makes it out and the boy is saved. thoughts?

I figured you would say that. Hopefully some others pile in here. Should be an interesting thread. We will see how many people actually say yes

On accident. The boy stepped in front of a deer at the exact wrong second.

As im sure many soldiers who have seen action can say(I am not a soldier), but doing what needs to be done may not always be ethical or even moral. But sometimes.. what needs to be done, needs to be done. Simple fact is, the kid would have died if Otis hadn't. IMO when is comes to a life or death situation, sometimes ethical may not even exist.

Well, lets define this argument in terms then of whether this was the right thing or wrong thing

So it's ethical since it would have likely resulted in three deaths otherwise?

Alright. So this relates to politics in this way: If a fetus is a living human being, and the mother's life is in jeopardy, is it really ethical to murder the fetus in order to gain the net life? I would argue the "net life" method of treating things is a very scary situation indeed

So, Otis hurts a boy. The boy, without medical treatment, will die. Otis and Shane find the medicine, and Shane cripples Otis to get away, reasoning it's worth it to save the boy. What moron would argue it was ethical? Who necessary, ethical, reasonable It is never ethical to take an innocent life(he shot him on accident) to save a life, end discussion. Is it necessary? If we assume there was no other way for them to get out alive, then it is debatable. Even a million lives to one may not be necessary in some cases. You would have to figure out why it would be necessary in the first place for each one to survive, which is way to much work for me right now. Now, was it reasonable? Like above, if there was no other way for them to get out, and both would die if one wasn't sacrificed, then yes, I believe it was reasonable, if unethical. I base this on the fact that by doing this, you got rid of a middle aged over-weight guy and in return got a boy in a time where it would be very hard to raise a child, and the hardest parts of it were already over.

That sounds sort of eugenical. Like he's a less valuable person. I understand where youre coming from, but still.. it just sounds a little scary. My opinion is that it is never the right thing to intentionally kill an innocent life to save extra lives from nature. Not our place to do that in my eyes. Now sacrificing your life to save others is a different story

It does, doesn't it. I would never do it, because how often are you in that kind of situation and know for sure it is the only way to get out of it? It all depends on the situation. If a crazed man told me that he had a nuke planted in a city somewhere, and the only way to save the city would be to execute 1, or let's up the stakes, 100 people that were presumed innocent, I'd do it. Now that's assuming that he wasn't lying and the bomb really was there etc, just for a good example. In my opinion, a no tolerance policy is always asking for trouble.

I just don't know about that. You would kill 100 innocent people to save a city from a bomber? I'm not saying thats ridiculous, but that's some deep crap

Not ethical IMO. It is murder for one's arbitrary decision of whose life is more important and, of course, in this instance, said person has decided to preserve himself as well. It is CLEARLY unethical IMO.
