Packing down coffee grinds...


In search of a more full bodied flavor I've been packing down my dark roast grinds into the gold mesh filter I have. I know this is dumb but I perceive a difference in the flavor. Maybe placebo, but I don't understand how it couldn't work. The more compact the longer it steeps through, the more flavor extracted...

I got the idea from a Vietnamese restaurant where they steep the dark-ass coffee through those little cups. I asked why it had the metal press on top and he said you could adjust the flavor and steep time by pressing down on the metal disk which sat on top the grounds. I pressed mine and it seemed to work.

I want to create some sort of metal press I could leave in the pot that would serve the same purpose. But I'll likely end up poisoning myself or getting a giant kidney stone. Oh well. Tell me I'm just obsessing about something that doesn't do a damn thing. Please.

How much coffee do you use per cup?

I use a tablespoon per 'cup'. Ten scoops in the filter for water filled up to the 10 on the carafe.

Gotcha. I usually do one and a half tablespoons per cup.

number one thing I would recommend is going to Fresh Market or Whole Foods and finding a bean that has a very full-bodied/dark flavor and grinding those for house-made coffee. also, just simply use more grinds per cup of water.

I almost always buy medium-roasted beans because I like a lighter, sweeter flavored coffee.. but to get the boldness I use 1 1/2 tbsp per cup of water.

A French press is a good thing to have. And like R2R said, find a bean with the bolder flavors you like. I like strong coffee too.

Question about the french press.

Are you supposed to pour off the entire amount of coffee after your brew time is over or leave in in the press?
