Texas to begin drug testing for welfare/unemployment benefits

I think this is a good idea. Did a search and didn't find anything, hope it isn't germans.

My question is can a state take this sort of action on a federal program? Also, for those on the left, I will assume you would be against this, what is your reasoning for that stance?

Should provide jobs in the drug testing industry.

On face, but the removal of money and power from drug dealers saves a lot of money in our bloated prison system.

The sociological effect of drug testing for welfare and unemployment could be an incredible positive.

Is cost savings the only concern, does the principle of the matter not bother you?

Exactly.

I'm pretty torn on it though. Dependents would just start using perscription pills and medicines to get their fix.

US DOJ is going to move to block this, as will the ACLU. They just have to get the right federal judge in Texas.

Perhaps, but have they ever actually taken money away? Isn't something like 80% of welfare related to single motherhood? Meaning the benefit is tied to the kid, not the parent.

Don't care!!!

Tax paying citizens need to comply with drug testing for more employers, so the benefactors of the taxes should comply with random testing to receive benefits.

GO TEXAS!!!

Are there any other ways of dampening cartel profits and reducing violence?

Sometimes, on the surface, being responsible with your money costs more like, for example, hiring an accountant, financial planner or attorney to help with decisions and information gathering. Most successful people I have ever read about or listened to say this cost is a worthwhile investment however.
Just a different perspective perhaps.

Does it bother you? I've been tested at work for the last 25 years. If government isn't going to step in for Joe Citizen in the private workforce then we cannot bitch about government mandated piss tests. I think of a goose and a gander when talking about this subject.

Against. Not cost effective.

Let's not assume drug users are rational transactors. They are not exactly known for their budgeting acumen. If momma don't get a check, momma takes what she wants. Momma don't care.

With drug users, expect drug usage. No drop in demand. No change in prison population. Other people's money will still be used to pay for drug habits.

So it is a civil liberty to get stoned on illegal drugs? Hmmm

If I had to be drug tested for my job, then I don't see a problem with drug testing welfare recipients.

For the record, I don't believe everyone on welfare is on drugs, but I don't want to be paying for the ones that are.

Pretty much. We need our entitlements to cost less, not more.

So if you don't want your kid to starve then DON'T DO DRUGS!

Pretty simple if you ask me.

Yes the fact that my tax dollars are going to support a drug addict and not put food on the table does bother me. If your on govt assistance you should use that assistance for it's intended purpose. Period.
