Bands That Remind You Of Pink Floyd

A couple I'll mention, first there's Porcupine Tree which has the more rock sound of Floyd at times. My favorite track of their is "Collapse The Light Into Earth" and "Trains" is also very good.

And then there's a much more obscure group called Arnold and the album is "Hillside" a really cool collection of songs that sounds a lot like Pink Floyd's earlier mellow stuff.

Not saying these groups always sound like the Floyd, they just remind me of some of their better works. What you got?

The solo in this song sounds just like Pink Floyd.

Agreed on the earlier stuff, but I was talking about some of the mellower stuff with Syd and even some of the mellow things Gilmour did like on Obscured by Clouds. I was just trying to match the band with a portion of their sound. I understand that not all of the early stuff was mellow.

Tame Impala may be a good one. They have a heavy psychedelic bent. They may be more Beatles then Pink Floyd though.

They may actually be right in line with the earlier Syd stuff.

I gotcha. It's clear you know what you're talking about. I sometimes get a little defensive when people talk about Pink Floyd.

That's a good one. Another (a bit of a stretch, maybe) would be White Denim. Could maybe throw Beach House in there?

Radiohead - OK Computer and Kid A are pretty comparable.

Sigur Ros is somewhat compatible with Dark Side of the Moon/Gilmour.

In 83 when Dire used the legendary Paul Franklin on steel along with two key players-one on simple analogs and the other using very Wrightish B3 drawbars there were some real moments with Knoppfler's talky baritone and patient, one ton strat notes where they got into an ethereal Floyd thing. Just for passages, like on Private Investigations, but it was real reminiscent of Floyd's sound.

Check out Live at Madrid DVD if you ever get a chance, it's an all-time concert, if you dig that palette of sound you'll like it.

Pete Bardens - In Dreams

The entire "Seen One Earth" CD is great! He was the founding member of the rock group Camel. He played organ, piano, synthesizers and mellotron and wrote songs. Bardens also worked alongside Rod Stewart, Mick Fleetwood and Van Morrison and recorded solo albums, this one being his best, a tremendous collection of songs he slowly put together and saved for years while touring with others.

I love me some gloomy David Gilmour solo's. I can't seem to find any artist that can do it like him.

None. Ever.

Sorry, but in my mind that band is in a category all its own. And no one can match their sound. Waters' pure genius lyrics and music combined with Gilmour's pipes of platinum and impossibly perfectly smooth riffs on top of Mason's wonderfully master crafted beats coated with Wrights golden fingered melodies is something that has never and will never happen again.

I do love the Flaming Lips though.
