| At what point in history did Democrats and Republicans switch sides? (Posted on 11/13/12 at 3:40 pm)
Democrats began as the party of conservatives. Republicans were the liberals. When did they switch?

Based on what, exactly? Republicans have always been the party of business and capitalism. In fact, opposition to slavery was mainly rooted in a fear of slavery replacing capitalism, not a genuine concern of the slave.

People switched sides, not parties. The southern whites didn't like the Republican stance on salvery, so they moved to the Democrat party.

Here is what I've learned from Democrats: The Democrats that were supporting segregation and passing Jim Crow Laws were really republicans. For example, Robert Byrd was really a Republican because he was in the Klan.

Do you consider Progressives to be in favor of business and Capitalism? If not, your post doesn't hold true.

Republicans have never changed, democrats have. I don't belong to a political party; I am a democrat - Will Rogers

They held deep disdain for the alliance between government and business. Think Ron Paul.

So we can expect to be put in prison for having dissenting political views? Cause Lincoln did that shite and was re-elected.

Teddy Roosevelt was more Woodrow Wilson than he was William Mckinley.

It was completely necessary, imo. Lincoln understood that in times of crises, the constitution must be circumvented in order to preserve it.

Very few Republicans were in favor of equality. A huge platform of the Republican Party was to free the slaves and ship them all back to Africa. That was a serious item up for discussion in 1854-1863 or so.
