| southern states and secession (Posted on 11/13/12 at 10:54 am)
Seems to be alot of folks saying the southern states cannot make it on their own I respectfully disagree I cannot cite details about all the southern states but Arkansas has everything it needs to get by on its own Puoltry cattle and swine production number one rice producer in world nuclear power plant natural gas walmart distribution murphy oil refinery deepwater port I am sure the other southern states would do just fine also ...would things be different of course Arkansas has to have a balanced budget so we couldnt and wouldnt deficit spend Texas has this as well the real problem is that the US would not allow this happen

You could have added this to one of the 4 threads on this that are already going.

You might want to look at the output versus consumption

no it doesn't. Arkansas would be needing a bailout within 5 years if it went it alone.

All of these delusional "Crackerstans" would be dumpster fires. I'm sure you seen the numbers regarding how much you send to the feds versus what you get back. In Alabama it is $1.66 back for every dollar sent probably about the same in Arkansas. Okay your new country would end all the social services that the 66 cents helps to pay for. That'll make for some fine chaos. I can only imagine how that would be handled. The rest of the world would think twice about doing business in Crackerstan - so there goes a lot of your tax base. All the car companies would leave because doing business in Crackerstan is bad for the brand. Oh and there's the bill as you walking out the door. Can't keep all the infrastructure that the rest of the country has paid for. So now you've got a deficit. What would be Crackerstan's bond rating? Without the wealthier states help we're a big failure - on our own a disaster.

Add in Alabama with our massive coal industry along with huge forestry, steel, and auto industries as well. On top of that we've got a great deep water port in Mobile as well. Hell, with Huntsville we could even start up our own space program. When you take all these things and remove the EPA and welfare state obligations that come from Washington, we could have a very strong country consisting of only the Southern states.

In Louisiana, how much does the Fed make from oil and gas, how about the Mississippi River and the commerce that comes from there...

No, it would be a weak arse country that would end up begging the rest of the states for help in short order. There might be rich natural resources in those states but the growth industries of the US are not located in the red states. Technology and bio-med are stronger in the blue states. On top of that, you would see a science brain drain. Scientists are more often democrats than republicans, and they would flee. On top of that, the truly elite universities are in blue states. There are some good schools in the south, but its only a handful. succession is the worst possible idea I have seen floated. I am up for the US breaking into pieces but the south succeeding isn't the right first step. Much better to have a coordinated break up.

Why is this even a serious discussion? Not to get too dramatic but what you are talking about is treason.
