I only have a basic understanding of the bill; so, what is driving up costs on healthcare? From what I can tell, a larger group of people will be insured, which would mean more people getting services. I think service providers get paid when they provide services, right? Now, non-provider business costs and personal insurance are a different story.

This is contrary to recent Unicorn sightings in area. Thusly, your claim is FALSE.

My father-in-law had a medical practice that consisted mainly of elderly sick people on Medicare. By the time he closed his practice, Medicare was paying my father-in-law $29 for an hour visit. He's internal medicine, so his patients had multiple ailments and usually took up every bit of that hour. The last year, he had to pay his nurses and office staff out of his own pocket, because that amount of money couldn't even pay his overhead. He know works as a hospitalist and does fine, but nearly 1000 patients in the Monroe area lost the best doctor in the region. So, here's the question: What incentive does anyone have to become a physician when the single payer doesn't pay enough to have your own business?
This is the exact scenario I have been preaching about since Obamacare was passes. I see it in my practice as a CRNA and every physician that I work with.

come on, a change as large as the ACA is going to have ramifications. you cannot just take overt something that was largely dominated by the private sector and not expect it to have negative effects lets start with the profit margin requirements which are required under the ACA, with profit cuts come job cuts. you know this....

It only takes a basic understanding to recognize that the OP is probably f.o.s.

What you fail to realize is like Medicaid patients that I see in my state are able to get insurance at either no cost or at a reduced rate. Any sniffle, cough or headache, these patients are in the ER. No personal responsibility at all! Healthcare will now become buffet oriented. How many people here eat too much when they go to a buffet because they can and its relatively cheap? This is what will continue to happen when you provide low to no cost medical care. People will start treating it like a buffet. I see it now with Medicaid. This definitely won't reduce the cost of medical care.

forgive me as my brain isn't working at the moment, but it is the provision in the bill which requires health insurers to spend a certain amount of premium income on benefits and services......which essentially amounts to cutting into profits which will hurt the industry as a whole

A company that provides healthcare would likely receive MORE remuneration from Obamacare... so until we know more details I'll have to conclude his assertion of "more costs" is pure bunk.
I don't know if the costs are the problem, but revenue definitely is. My wife is a speech therapist in a nursing home and all of the Medicare patients who were receiving 100 days of therapy before are only receiving 20 now. So layoffs will have to occur as skilled nursing is a large portion of a nursing home's revenue.

Healthcare will be in the red more than the post office. What government anything is run well? It's 2/3 waste, inefficiency, dead head workers, long lines, craply device. The DMV responsible for your health care. Goal is to destroy the one reason to stay in this country for retirees (mostly conservative voters). Death panels deciding if grandma is worth the hip replacement surgery or not. 47 million Americans on food stamps. Obama got 16 million votes on top of that. The 47% is now the 52%. Game over.

Here it is:
quote:
Insurers must spend 80% (for individual or small group insurers) or 85% (for large group insurers) of premium dollars on health costs and claims, leaving only 20% or 15% respectively for administrative costs and profits, subject to various waivers and exemptions. If an insurer fails to meet this requirement, there is no penalty, but a rebate must be issued to the policy holder. This policy is known as the 'Medical Loss Ratio'.[69][70][71][72]

That happens with employer-provided health plans, too. People are generally insulated from the cost of their care. But your post seems irrelevant to this thread. More people going to clinics would mean more REVENUE for those providers.

First of all many of these stories are always pretty dubious. It's not like if we have single payer there just won't be any doctors. Second, this thread seems to be on the payer side, not provider.

No wonder you all voted for Obama. You can't think critically. I can't even build an arguement, because sense and reality just do not compute with you people.

i actually think this is working as intended. The goal is to get administrative costs down, closer to medicare admin costs, which I believe are like 1%. To do that, they need to trim things up. My BIL is a big wig at a hospital (he is a dr), and he thinks a big reason why health care costs are so high are due to insurance spending so much on administration. I have no idea if its true. he is a big fan of preventive services too, said that will drive down costs. he was mostly disappointed with obamacare but think its going to help get health care costs under control and improve coverage.
