| Gar recipes? (Posted on 11/13/12 at 9:23 am)
I know some people never keep these fish and some people do. I am curious to know if anyone has any great gar recipes that they've used or tried in the past?

A freind of mine takes the backstrap meat and grills it with butter and lemon. Pretty good stuff! They are a pain to clean, so I have never kept one.

Gar Balls. Put the meat in a grinder. Season and make a ball with the minced meat. Drop in egg wash and then in fish fry or whatever. Deep fry. Looks like a boudon ball when done. I dont eat that shit, but thats how they do it.

A waste of time and trouble to attempt.

You should try it! There are better fish swimming around, but it was supringly good. I never would have thought it though.

Cut it across the grain in silver dollar sized pieces and fry. When it's fresh you can't beat it. Also, you can cut out a roast with the backbone in. A football-sized roast (approx) is what I do. Brown it in a black pot and make a gravy. Stew it down til it's about falling off the bone. Dammit, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Add bread crumbs, chopped onions & eggs to miced meat to make balls. Then cook balls in a red gravy. Have not had the desire to do one since I was a teenager Best advice...have a machete and hacksaw to clean that SOB I'd rather clean a turtle Good luck

Sawzall is what my buddy uses to get the backstrap meat. Too much work even with power tools to me though

With a hammer, one nail, a sharp machete, and a small paring knife, I can take a 75 lb gar apart in 5 minutes.

This. But you left out the last step: "Give the gar balls to the dog."

We used to use a hatchet for the chore. A fish that needs to be cleaned with such an instrument is not worth worrying about if you throw it back.

So you don't like the wifes dog because he/she is named Fluffy, and your wife makes all of these bizarre guttaral noises when she calls the damned thing?

I've never had the opportunity to eat it, but I'd give it a try. I might even be willing to try nutria if someone else cooked it and it smelled okay. And I didn't see the rat tail.
