No one has yet to explain why Bush got nearly 50% of the Hispanic vote. Free stuff?
Bush only lost 56% of the vote because most latinos are more liberal than conservative economically. Hispanics also, according to polling data, had a more hard line stance against abortion and gay marriage at that time. That helped Bush greatly. Nearly a decade has passed. Republicans have made some missteps on immigration since.

It's a combination of a lot of different things, though. It's not just immigration is what I'm saying. The problems the party has also include an economic outlook among the majority of hispanics that is different from the party's.

I think the problem is latinos think republicans don't like them. Its not the immigration issue, its how fierce the right fights to be the toughest on immigration. And I think Hispanics perceive them to be racist.

Would you vote for someone you thought didn't like you b.c of something you don't control? I don't think you would.

I personally think the republican argument of pro-liberty, smaller gov't appeals to a large segment of the population. But they frick it up with their stance on other issues: gay marriage, abortion, immigration, etc. If they could just shut the frick up, then they might do better with certain demographics including hispanics.

But the thing is they won't STFU. They are going to keep babbling about legitimate rape, two border fences, self deportation, etc. Then they are going to get all angry about how this country is ruined, and imply its minorities that are ruining it.

Agreed. What some people miss is that many Latinos (along with swing white voters) who aren't "stupid" and vote more for economic issues are even more concerned about corporate abuses of extreme centralized power than simply government spending.

To make headway with those voters, fiscally conservative or libertarian influenced candidates need to reveal that their policies seriously confront the middle class shrinking into working poor.

Unlike hardcore conservatives, Latinos don't tend to be a priori anti-government and so they're not as easily convinced that this trend isn't more due more to runaway corporate power that has been fueled by recent republican policy than it is due to taxes and government spending.

As an aside: truer libertarians themselves may need to look toward their natural allies on the far left in this regard who are, among other things, very serious about the plight of local, small business vs huge corporations?
