A buddy of mine made a still out of an old keg. It worked pretty well. However, we never were patient enough to let the whiskey age, so we just made vodka and drank it instead.

Be very careful if you decide to try. At worst it can kill you and blindness is another option.

you can do a cheap setup very easily. Are you just wanting your own distilled strong stuff? we used to do it back in college, called it liquid retard You can just buy some sugar and mix with water, then add the yeast mixed with your favorite fruit juice. Ive used apple juice, then let it ferment as for a stil, We made it out of copper tubing and pipe fited to our sink, then retro fited an old pressure cooker to the copper tubing

This is it. The white PVC has copper coiled up inside to cool it and the clear hose on the side is where the water is pumped in in order to keep the coils cool. Pretty cheap and worked well.

Tin cup of fruit cocktail juice sittin' on an engine manifold with a pinch of yeast...oops, sorry, that's grog. The biggest cost is the boiler. I've seen them made out of beer kegs. Then it's water grade copper tubing, some fittings and/or a $20 solder kit with non-lead solder. I'm sure there are plenty of videos these days on YouTube. I also once saw some scientists brewing a small batch with glass chemistry equipment and a Bunsen burner (basically and boiler and a condenser). Or be willing the fork out the dough and get a kit from hillbillystills.com or other similar supplier. Or have a buddy who can weld stainless steel and a fist full of $$$ to buy stainless steel.

I knew a few folks that dabbled with in NC and GA. All I remember is to never, ever drink the first few ounces that come off of the still because its a different type of alcohol which can blind or kill you.

I built a small working still for my 7th grade GT project. Got an A and almost expelled. Didn't know it was illegal. It worked. I made a batch with a mash recipe some old timer gave me. They made me destroy it, but they can't destroy KNOWLEDGE!

Here is how we did it. Boil water and disolve as much sugar as it can hold into it Fruit juice of your choice, make sure its natural, warm it up and mix in yeast Let the sugar water cool, then mix in yeast and place into a sealed container that can take a little pressure. Then the hard part, let it sit for a few weeks to a month(I think we used to wait about 4-5 weeks, as I recall) Last step is to boil off the alcohol, you need something to be able to cook it in and capture all the vapor, like the keg picture above. We used a pressure cooker with a hole taped into the top. Run the tubing through water to condense the alcohol and you are done. its not really that hard

Easiest cheapest set up is a pressure cooker on a hot plate. After a little of that you will want to go to a 60qt crawfish pot... or so Ive been told

Yes it is. Dont start without reading up and doing your homework. Its as simple as baking a cake. Learn to make your mash, then get the right temps for cooking at each step. Thats it once you build a still and it can be as simple of complex as you want.
