I finally saw this movie and was pretty impressed with it. Some of my friends hated it though, so what's the consensus on here about it?

First: I think it helps to like the earlier Alien movies (1 & 2) or at least know something about them to understand some of the plot.
As a stand-alone movie it was a solid movie. It freaked out Ms. Nimble for sure, but left a person with a bunch of loose ends to figure out.
As a precursor to Alien- it was running uphill and into the wind during a snowstorm with regards to expectations.

i enjoyed it somewhat.
SPOILER:
My son jumped back so hard in the recliner he turned it over when it jumped out of the dudes mouth in the alien ship.

Overall I judged it to be a good movie, but well short of great.
There were plenty of things to like; just a many things to dislike.
It is a well produced Sci-fi movie with good CGI. The big budget gave us a well polished film. For the genre, we don't get very many of these types of movies each year. It helps if you are a fan of Sci-fi and/or Ridley Scott films.
But there was a lot of bad that really dragged the movie down. Poor screen play, bad casting, and non-existant character development. Many of the scenes were good; but too many scenes throughout the movie were just plain stupid.

other than David, this is true. One of the only drawbacks for me.
I finally watched it Friday (in 3D), and I loved it. Great visual movie. I also loved that, while it wasn't a true prequel to Alien, you still felt it was in the same universe and knew that this movie lays the groundwork for the Alien films. It was a very good way to make a "prequel" without ruining it.

It seemed like so many gaping holes in the plot the first time through. And it is so derivative of 2001 and Blade Runner at times. But after the 20 minute explanation on Youtube I'd probably only dislike it 25% as much or less. But even after a decent explanation there are still holes in this one.
