quote:
With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell’s classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Annointed, Sowell, one of America’s most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency, but our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision of what ought to be. Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a ”landmark work” and selected for this prize ”because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government.” In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose ”contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant.”

On Wings of Eagles by Ken Follett. It taught me that where government is impotent, in many cases, individuals can persevere and succeed, in spite of the obstacles government puts in front of you.

A combination of multiple books over the years. There isn't just one. There are the obvious ones and the not so obvious. I would just list books if I wanted to. Ranges from A Brave New World to The Divine Comedy, The Bible, Crime and Punishment, and even to books such as Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and Xenocide. I tend to find some philosophical meaning in most well-written books.

The most endlessly applicable is probably Sun Tzu's "Art of War". I don't read a lot of political literature, but Michael Crichton's "State of Fear" was a great one about the dangers of politicized science and the climate change debates. Animal Farm also helped. The Bible is up there as well, especially the concept of the "Golden Rule".

“There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kid’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.” - Raj Patel
