In no order, Beretta 92fs any glock you like springfield XD series (mine is a .40, can't GET it to jam up even once) and if you're super rich, there are a lot more options.

I'll throw in my vote for a .357 large frame revolver. I've got a Smith and Wesson 686 with 2.5 inch barrel, you'd be amazed at the places you can hide it. Like already said a .357 mag will also shoot a 38 and 38 +P cartridge, which does help in getting used to shooting it and you can always find one of the three ammo types.

I think this has had the most votes. If you want a revolver, it's a great choice. My vote for a polymer semi auto would be S&W M&P40. You can always buy a 9mm barrel and run with that as well. For steel framed, I am a big fan of the Beretta 92/90 two. They are quite reliable. I've shot mine 9000-10000 times and it runs like a top. I haven't done any maintenance on it at all besides regular cleaning. It still has the factory recoil spring. If you want to go 45, you can always go 1911. But know that it's quite heavy and won't be as easy to carry if you wish to conceal it. Same goes for the Beretta. 2A!

Still can't touch a ruger 5 or 6 shooter for reliability.

Academy has a great deal coming on Black Friday on the Taurus P92, about a hundred bucks off list. What do you guys think of this particular Taurus? I've done some research, they are still built in the original Beretta factory on the Beretta machines that does the Beretta 92. The pros are high capacity magazine, good for home defense, and the price is right at $350 with tax. 9mm is cheap as hell to shoot and with 15 rounds I feel comfortable the wife could hit something with it if need be. The Cons: its a Taurus.
