What Kind of Download Speeds Does One Really Need for Streaming TV Like Hulu

Sister is in the process of moving and she is picking an Internet provider. What kind of download speeds does she really need to watch streaming tv. She has a roku and uses Hulu, Hbo to Go,etc.

The Internet company she called, Time Warner, I think, says she needs the most expensive package at $85/month if she's going to stream.

I don't think this is the case as I believe my Cox bill was only $45 a month(I can't remember what package I had ) and I was able to stream, use wifi, just fine. There is no way I was getting super fast downloads from Cox for only $45 a month, so I don't think that's really necessary.

Anyone know what minimum download speeds are needed to watch tv and movies without having it render or pause to catch up every so often?

A package similar to yours would suffice, definitely doesn't have to be top of the line as TWC would suggest.

Most streaming services buffer based on your speed. You will get lower quality but it will still work. What you have to check for is if they do a monthly transfer cap on how much data you can use. That may be why they said that.

Really 10 to 15 meg should be fine for this.

I easily streamed with the cheapest Cox package. She might have to buffer HD but she can just turn the HD option off.

I just went to their website and for up to 10Mbps its $30. For up to 20Mbps its $50. They were trying to sell her 50Mbps for $80. I guess that would be good for streaming

So, should she go with the 10 for $30 or 20 for $50?

Those companies always try to get you to buy the most expensive package

How many people or different devices are going to stream or surf the web at once ? Makes a big difference.

10 to 15 meg should be good for a single device.

She wants Fios, has only heard good things about it, but it's not offered in her area. She gets to choose from Time Warner or UVerse.

I live in the country and have a horrible DSL connection (little over 3mbps) and I am able to get good quality streaming from netflix and hulu. Not HD but the level right below it.
