SNES or PSX were the absolute best consoles for RPGs. N64 was deplorable. Most of what PS2 and PS3 has had to offer (at least in my opinion) has been an extension of those franchises.

Was Wild Arms a PSX title? If so, couple that with the higher single digit Final Fantasy titles and thats the console that I choose.

Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy Tactics were two of my favorites during the PSX days.

Legend of Zelda OoT and MM and Mario RPG disagree with you.

I was never a big RPG guy growing up, but Earthbound and Secret of Mana alone make that a great lineup.

tough call between snes and psx. psx has had great SNES RPGs ported onto it so if you count that then I'd have to go with psx

Mario RPG = SNES wins for me. That is one of my all-time favorite games.

Not only was it the best for RPGs, it might have been the greatest console of all time. Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Mario World, Mario Kart,... The SNES was incredible.

Three games hardly makes a great console. SNES and PSX both have multiple franchises spanning multiple games that are historically great. To me that is what suggests greatness.

Sega Genesis (Phantasy Star series) and Sega CD (all of the Working Designs games) had a bunch of stuff that PSX and SNES did not. But, probably not as MUCH stuff though. SNES and PS1 have quite the catalog.

PS1. Not even close due to sheer volume of quality RPGs. FF 7-9 + tactics (could also count chronicles, origins and anthology) Vagrant Story Legend of Dragoon Xenogears Suikoden 1 & 2 Front Mission 3 Wild Arms 1 & 2 Lunar Silver Star Story + Eternal Blue Chrono Cross Grandia Legend of Mana Breath of Fire 3 & 4 Saga Frontier Persona Star Ocean Rhapsody Arc the Lad Brave Fencer Musashi Threads of Fate Jade Cocoon Valkyrie Profile Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Parasite Eve 1 & 2 Tactics Ogre

SNES was a fricking brilliant RPG console. Unfortunately, the days of long epic adventure games are behind us and tons of rehashed, graphical RPGs are coming out these days. That said, the art style for Mario RPG still blows me away to this days whether it was intentional or not.

I think he means from an RPG standpoint, which he's right, but the N64 has aged as a whole much better than the PS1 did.
