re: There has to be a way to get Miles to stop coaching scared

when i said series i meant set of downs. sorry for not being specific

quote:

But I think going conservative on 3rd down and trying to get an easier FG was the right call.

the problem was that there was no cohesive plan other than "frick it we may kick a long FG that doesn't really do us that much good" once that decision was made it decreases the possibility of success greatly

That's cause you've blown your own mind with all your "lucky plays" "better in state talent" crap.

well Louisiana has more talent than Oregon and we had a bunch of lucky plays go out way last year

other people brought up Oregon's talent. i didn't. i just responded to their comments

The last three downs peplexed me to say the least. Mett was on fire in the second half. One more first down and the game is over. We should have gone for the kill shot with atleast one pass attempt over the top. Also, I would have preferred taking a delay of game and pooch punting at the end.

The fk? A FG would have greatly increased our chances of winning. It would have made Bama have to score a TD in 90 seconds with 0 timeouts. Obviously the D blew it anyway, but running the ball was the right call on that set of downs anyway. There was 2 & 1/2 minutes left. We were in FG range and we made Bama use their last 2 timeouts.

and if we missed it we give them amazing field position and they only need to go like 30 yards for the tying FG

the advantage was to make them go farther

alleman is not a good FG kicker. planning to rely on him was foolish

Would have been a career long kick. A bad choice in my opinion.

i'm not shitting on the kid...that's not an automatic kick in teh NFL. he's a shaky college kicker who had already missed a FG and got hit by a defender on the fake

Me either. Length of the drive Bama has to make at that point is more important than a field goal. I was disappointed we didn't attempt a first down play action pass. We had a chance to truly ice the game with a touchdown.

This is my problem. It isn't the risks taken, it's the complacency when LSU had the chances to put Bama away. LSU left the door open for Bama to come back and we knew they would most likely take advantage of it.

Just doesn't have the killer instinct. It's "hold on and hope."

Come on Slo, you aren't this ignorant. Alleman is 29/38 in his career. Pretty solid right? He is also 29/34 on kicks under 50 yards. He was 4/4 on kicks in the 40-49 yard range. It doesn't get much better than that in college.

quote:

and if we missed it we give them amazing field position and they only need to go like 30 yards for the tying FG

And if we go for it and fail they are in the same spot. If we pooch punt and get a touchback then they have to go 8 more yards. Even if we pin them at the 5 it is just 20 more yards they have to go. Kicking the FG was absolutely the right call.

If you want to argue the play calling before 4th down, then fine. We had 2nd & 7 and Bama had 1 timeout left. You figure we could get at least 2 yards and make it 3rd and 5 from about the 25. That would have opened up the playbook on 3rd down. Even if we throw and its incomplete it still has a 42 yard kick. Instead, we lost 3 yards and were left with a 3rd & 10 from the 31. Throwing the ball for a 1st down in that situation is unlikely. Running the ball and hoping to get 3-4 yards was the right play call. It makes the FG easier for Alleman and runs the clock down.

Plenty of Miles bashing around here, but the gameplan for Bama was pretty damned good overall. While I agree that they should have thrown on 3rd down in the last series while Mett was throwing darts, but Miles had faith in the defense at that point, and I can't blame him there.

Fake FG, 55 yd FG attempt, and Ware 4th down were all bad HC calls, but IMO, the Copeland penalty was the killer.

the problem was that our coaches acted as if our only option was to run up the gut 3 times and kick a FG. they should have done more to try and get the first, imho. i can't stand when coaches take a fatalistic attitude in those situations

I agree, but you can have a solid gameplan and still have chinks in the armor. Miles gets cold water testicles deep in enemy territory.

Miles just used Saban's gameplan from 1/9

A first down play action over the top would have been a touchdown if executed correctly.

the infamous first down PA catches saban teams off guard all the time

my favorite playcall on a 3rd and long like we have is a PA bootleg (off a stretch run fake) with a TE dragging right with the QB

if the TE is open, throw

if the Te isn't open, the qb puts 2 hands on the ball and try to get a few yards on the ground

We ran off tackle on 2nd & 7 and lost 3 yards. That killed the drive. Like I said before, you get a couple yards on 2nd down and you open the playbook for 3rd down. Instead you get put in a 3rd down situation where you are on the edge of Alleman's range.

In that particular situation the odds are even better for success. All defensive players are creeping to the line at the snap.

I think it's Chavis who needs to take the heat for this one in going to the very soft 2 deep zone/2 deep man under, with a veteran QB. The pressure had been working for the entire second half. He tried to throw the blitz at him on the last play, McCarron picked it up and . . .
