Joe South RIP
quote:
Joe South, a singer-songwriter who wove confrontational lyrics into bouncy pop hits of the late 1960s and early ’70s, including “Games People Play,” “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” and “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden,” died on Wednesday at home in Flowery Branch, Ga., north of Atlanta. He was 72
A key figure during the golden age of Atlanta rock, and a very talented songwriter: Billy Joe Royal - "Hush" (1967) original version Deep Purple - "Hush" (1968) this version made #4 on the singles chart This is my favorite Joe South song: Joe South - "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home"

Released in 1968 (the same year as other pioneering country-rock efforts like The International Submarine Band's Safe At Home and The Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo) this underappreciated gem is, IMHO, The Everly Brothers' finest hour. "Mama Tried" "Less Of Me" "Sing Me Back Home" -- the opening gospel snippet is from a radio show the Everlys' parents did in the early 1950s

I don't want to get too hung up on time, but... While I love Neko, she might be more appropriately placed in an alt.country thread

it's not a big deal -- besides emmylou and bonnie come from the country-rock era (tho I consider Bonnie more "Roots" than C-R, if that make sense)

J.D. Souther was one of the founders of the Southern California country-rock sound back in the late 60's. How Long Prisoner in Disquise Souther was in Longbranch Pennywhistle with Glenn Frey in his pre-Eagles days.
