| Teague's Ongoing Hawk /Falconry Thread - renamed for clarity (Posted on 10/19/12 at 8:19 pm)
Since some of you guys are interested in this, and I have very few people to discuss it with, here: We've just started working on the creance (long line) this week. I think this was his 4th day on it. We had to start at about 2 feet away. This is roughly 75 feet, and as far as we can go in my little, messy back yard. I trapped him two weeks ago, tomorrow. Hawkeye on the Creance Hope it works for you guys. For some reason I can't watch it directly on youtube, but if I embed it someplace it works. I'm thinking it's just a problem on my computer.

Cool. What's the reasoning for the line between you and the hawk? Is it like a guide for him or something?

To keep him from flying away. He's brand new. In the beginning, we keep them on a long leash called a creance. The problem with normal creances is they can snag on every little thing and jerk the hawk down onto the ground. So some of us, especially those of us with shitty back yards as shown, use the line stretched between two points with a short leash on a ring so that it won't snag on every stick or tuft of grass.

Ok. I didn't notice that he was tethered to it in the video. Makes sense.

I will. We should be out hunting by next weekend at the latest. I'll try to get some good hunting videos this year.

I remember u talking about it last yr, then saw your post the other day about trapping your new hawk. So that brings me to my question.. Do you have to catch a new one every year? Do you release them every year?

I'd be satisfied just to watch your hawk fly. This is one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. That is absolutely one beautiful bird. Raptors of any kind are my favorite birds.

Some people release them every year. Others keep them 20+ years. Training a new one is a lot of fun. That said, I plan to keep this one a long time unless he just doesn't pan out as a hunter. I would have kept the one I had last year, but she just didn't seem very good at catching stuff. My plan is to keep this guy as my staple, and try some other kinds of hawks once I get my general's license in a few months.

Don't know where you live, but you're welcome to stop by and go hunting with me if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Thanks, Teague! If I weren't 300 miles away, I'd definitely take you up on that offer! I'm in the far Southwest corner of Virginia. I've got lots and lots of family in SE Alabama, not far from where Angus lives. Please keep the videos and pics coming!

Contact your state club. Most of the time there's a falconer nearby that would be happy to let you be his beagle for the day.
