Or his wife won't let him watch the game. She's bitching that she needs to be taken out for dinner.

Well, I'm a girl, it's my birthday, my husband figures he'll get more out of me tonight than he will out of LSU, and the game was on in the restaurant. So...there's that.

If you pay TAF prices you're getting it from LSU too.

So how was Beausoliel?

re: On my way to Beausoliel REVIEW ADDED

It was really good. We had never been before and will definitely be back. Took a lot of advice from Schwartz's review.

My husband loves a good Old Fashioned and really enjoyed the two he had. I had the blueberry lemon drop cocktail and it was wonderful. They are not stingy with the liquor either. Excellent cocktails.

Hubs wanted turtle soup, but they were out of it "for the next couple of days", so he got the grilled shrimp over goat cheese grits cake with andouille gravy. He loved it. I tasted it, and the gravy was excellent. I got the beet salad because I adore beets. It was not a disappointment. Beets and goat cheese are a natural, and a nest of watercress on the top was a good choice of greens. I only saw three fried capers in the salad, but that was ok. The walnuts and walnut vinaigrette complemented the whole thing well. It was a huge portion, and I could not eat it all.

For my entree I was going to get the pork cheek/pork belly dish. They were out of pork cheeks. I got sauteed speckled trout over blue crab and squash hash with brown butter vinaigrette. I love brown butter sauces, so was very pleased with that. The trout was well cooked, and there was a good bit of crab in the hash. I expected the hash to be cubed bits of squash, but it was kind of "shoestring" instead. Not a problem, just a different texture than I expected.

My husband got seared scallops on chorizo risotto with chili butter. He was pretty interested to see how that turned out, as he loves scallops and chorizo separately. He was a bit concerned that the chorizo would overpower the scallop, and said that it did somewhat, but he enjoyed the dish.

He got the white chocolate bread pudding with butter pecan ice cream. Loved it. They do the bread pudding in a large muffin tin or popover pan, so there was a lot of "crust" which he prefers to a softer pudding. He said the ice cream was excellent with it. I had the chocolate pots de creme. Very chocolaty, very rich, good-sized portion. Tasted just like my mom's homemade chocolate pudding, which can't ever be bad. YUM!

We were very pleased with the food, the environs, and the service. The cracklings were a nice touch. There was a tv playing fairly quietly in the bar (with the highly venerated LSU game on), but it did not interfere with the dining experience. The portions were not huge (except the salad). My husband had three scallops. However, we were both satisfied without being miserably stuffed.

I was bemused not to be able to get two out of the six items we ordered, and heard the waitress tell the party at the next table that she could not get them a mint julep because they were out of mint. However, I understand when offering some choices which may be a bit unusual, i.e., not dumped from a Sysco bag, they may not always be available.

I will go back to try the pork belly.

re: On my way to Beausoliel REVIEW ADDED

Pork cheek, turtle, mint and foie gras are always readily available. These items (with the exception of the mint) have all been not available the last three times I have been. They are also the items I want to order. They need to remove and replace from the menu and just post as specials when they do have them.

This is a problem for me. I don't like being told they are out of something when it is on the daily menu. These aren't heirloom squash blossoms I'm talking about. And I should not have to get on the phone to call and ask.

I've gone through the rest of the menu, the salmon and lentils, the rabbit spaetzle are very good but those two and maybe add a couple more are unique. The rest of the menu, chicken breast, filet, grilled fish etc...I can get lots of places.

We have put the place on the back burner for now for the reasons above. Many of my friends feel the same way.

And I've had enough of the brocollini. Everywhere, not just there. Move on. Give me sautéed yard work or something if you must be trendy. Steamed marigolds, caramelized wood shavings, whatever.

re: On my way to Beausoliel REVIEW ADDED

Sorry, Martizzle, but this is the kind of place Baton Rouge needs more of.

I went with my wife, mom, and sister (three seperate people; no pics) to celebrate my sis getting a new job.

All the cocktails and dishes were a hit.

I had the smashing pumpkin to drink, and though I don't remember what was in it (pumpkin obviously) it was interesting and very good.

Appetizers had were foie gras, sweetbreads, shrimp over grits cake, and mussels. All excellent.

Salads had were the beet salad and fried oyster salad. Again, nice portions and delicious.

Entrees had were the rabbit with spatzzle (winner of the night), seared scallops, and pork cheeks/belly.

Food was excellent. Service was okay, but it was really busy. They paced the meal well and in the end we were too full for dessert.

I'll make a point to go back as much as I can

Thanks for the review! I enjoy Beausoleil too and I also wish we had more restaurants like it. Sorry about my earlier comment to you. I was just joking and being a smartass.

Thanks for the review, but yeah.. they should have had all of those things in the kitchen on a Saturday night.

I think I will suggest this place to my uncle the next time he is in BR for business, and maybe I'll drive up and meet him for dinner.

REALLY! This is interesting. And disturbing.

I understand what you are saying, and it is true that none of those things (in particular, mint) are rare delicacies, but I also am not seeing a lot of pork belly, turtle or foie gras on other BR menus. I salute Beausoliel for at least putting it on the menu and preparing it well (from all accounts). I completely agree, however, that they should make damned sure they have it on a Saturday night.

I was quite disappointed with not getting the things I wanted, but was pleased with what I got. For that reason, I will give them another chance. However, if I go THREE times and don't get pork belly, I will feel like you do.

Not saying we don't need it nor saying I don't like it. The items listed are preciously the reason I go and it's disappointing when they aren't available. As I said i can get fish, chicken and filets all over town.

For the record I've eaten there close to twenty times about half dinner, half lunch.
